Since it lias become a settled I'nct tlint this widespread (Unease, which is tho great enemy of poultry breeders, in caused by lico, almost always to bo seen on the heads of the young chickens lis soon as out of tho ogg, It becomes n matter of groat Impor tance to ku6w how tho lice can be exter minated before the evil work has boon done. We have read various artiolos upon this question, but fail to find that the ex periments of others have been in any re gard more satisfactory than our own. In loimor years we lost a great many valuablo birds by this scourge, for which we almost believe there was no remedy. For about three or four years we have used only one preraration, from a recipe of our own, and liave not lost a chick by this cause during that period. Several years ago we dis covered that almost any kind of greaso or oil was death to the lice in a majority of cases, though ono application was always sufficient. A little later we used skunk's oil for a season with eutiro satisfaction, but our supply being limited was at last ex hausted. We then experimented consider ably and have settled upon this prepara tion, which has been used rather lavishly at times, but never in a single instance with any disadvantage to tho chicks : Mix two ounces each of olive oil and oil of sassafras (or in the absenco of this oil, coal oil will do nearly as well,) with one ounce f spirits of turpentine, and tho simple but effective preparation is ready for use. We generally give tho hen amplo time to got her chicks well into tho world before troub ling her, and when they are from 12 to 24 hours old, apply the preparation to tho heads of nil. We use enough of tho oil to thoroughly wet down tho feathers and never l'.ave occasion to repeat the operation. We advise any person noeding such a remedy in their breeding, to try the merits of our recipe, and we think tho result will be sat isfactory. City Made Butter. For some time past an article has been sold in this market as butter, says the New York Timet, 'which is nothing but a com pound of animal fat, suet, milk, and oil. It is alleged that many reputable dealers in butter have been induced to purchaso this vile article, and sell it to their cus tomers as pure butter. , Large quantities of the article have been - sold to tho mill operatives in Paterson, and to the miners in Pennsylvania, and it has been shipped to the West Indies, thus destroying the char acter of the New York market. The spec ulators in this oompound have already es tablished manufactories in New York, Brooklyn, New Jersey, Hoboken, Newark, and Boston, and employ persons to collect grease and fat from butchers' shops and private dwellings. The matter has been brought under notice of the Butter and Cheese Exchango, and the members have pledged themselves not to purchase the article and to do all in their power to rid the market of it.' A sub-committee has been appointed to examine into the ques tion fully, aud to report the best means to be adopted to prevent the introduction of "oleomargarine," as the new butter is call ed, into the market. The new article can be manufactured for about fourteen cents per pound, and it is disposed of at thirty cents, realizing a handsome J roiit for the manufactures.', , j ' ! ; Simple Tree Preservative. To render posts or timber, placed in the ground, practically impervious to moisture, and for a long timo prevent decay, the fol lowing simple recipe has been tried and found to answer the purpose excellently. For fence and gate posts it is particularly lecommended. Take linseed oil, boil it, and mix it with charcoal dust until the mixture has the consistency of an ordinary paint. Give the posts a single coat of the mixture or paint before planting them, and no farmer, says one who has used it, living to the ago of the patriarchs of old, will live long enough to see the posts rotten. The pobts should be well-seasoned and dry when the paint is applied. How to Catch Crows. Milk a a number of small paper tuts, or, in other words, papers rolled up in the hlnipe of a ooue, about four inches deep, tl.ey must be pasted together' at the joint, so they will not como apart. Make holes in tho ground in your coin Hold, and set these papers up in them, big end up ; and drop into each one a small piece of meat. Then around the top, on the iusido, spread Home tar, such as you grease your wagons with, and your trap is completed. The cows will reach down in to got the meat aud the tar will stick fast to the feathers on their heads, the paper and all will como, and the crows are then blindfolded, and cannot therefore ily away. VB Fortv thousand head of cattle are said to have perished in Utah aud Nevada during tho winter. Chartered March 11, 1870. , XT. IB. Mutual Aid Society OF PENNSYLVANIA, HOMB OFFICII : , . .
