It was commonly supposed that Colonol William Phillipe, president' of the Alle gheny .Valley railroad, and one of Pittsburg's , millionarios, who died last week, was a bachelor and that his entire rfcal estate would go to his only brother and sister. However, it appears that there are other claimants to the rich inheritance, of this bachelor millionaire, as he was called. The story goes that Colonel Phillips was married years ago to widow ilermingray. The matter was always kept secret, the lady, who retained the name of Mrs. He mingray, having her residence apart from Colonel Phillips. As a result of this union five children were born, four boys and a girl. Mrs. Ilemingray died some six or seven years ago. Throe of the children are also dead, and the remaining two, whose names are William and Robert B' Ilemin gray, are still living, and it is they who now lay claim to the entire estate on the ground that they are legitimate children of Colonel Phillips, and, therefore, heirs to the estate. They have been consulting with their at torney in the premises, but no doflnate course has been decided upon, although the probibilities are that they will sue to recover the estate. It is said that there are persons living who witnessed the marriage ceremony be tween Colonel Phillips and Mrs. Hernia gray, as well as some who have seen the marriage cor ti Ilea to. The estate of Colonel Phillips is worth millions of dollars, and there promises to be a lively legal contest for the possession of it. , Extraordinary Disaster to a Hotel. 1 . At b.tlf-past 2 o'clock on the 17th Inst., the reservoir located in tho top story of the Lindell Hotel bt. Louis burst, with the report of a cannon, emptying its contents over the entire building, to the damago of not less than (30,000. The workmen employed in tho erection of f the building are accustomed to refill the reservoir at night for use on the ensuing day. The tank is located in the top story of the structure, and is filled by forcing the water through pipes leading thereto. The capacity of the reservoir is stated to be twenty thousand gallons. Those who were superintending the work this morning state emphatically that but eighteen thousand gallons had been emptied into the tank when it burst, and the conclusion seems irresistable that the accident resulted from some defect in the construction of the reservoir. The water percolated down through the building, ruining the plaster and stucco work employ ed in the decoration of the rooms in the lower stories, and resolving the basement into a miniature lake. Collision A Steam Tug Sunk. New York, April 21. The steamer Eleo tra of Providence and N. Y. line, and the steamer City of Boston, of the Norwich line, while rounding the battery into East River, and both endeavoring to escape col lision with a ferry boat, collided with each other. The Electra struck the City of Bos ton amidship, bursting her larboard boiler and cracking her steam chest. Nobody hurt The passengers of the City of Boston were transferred to the steamer Rhode Island, and taken east with only an hour's delay, .. The City of Boston was towed to her dock where she will discharge and repair. The Electra which bod her bow badly smashed returned to her dock and forward ed her passengers by another boat. To night, during tho excitement in the harbor over the accident, the steam tug B. J. Christian was sunk by the tug Camilla, while both were going to the assistance of the City of Boston. Crew saved. v 'The imminent danger to New Orleans from floods seems to be passing away, as the Mississippi is reported falling. The numerous crevasses have relieved the river and saved the city. The Mayor of New Orleans has made an urgent appeal for aid for tho distrssod people of that city, and a hill has passed through Congress for the Issue of Government army rations to the Buffering in various parts of Louisi ana. The freshet in Mississippi and Its tributaries and bayous this spring has caused more overflows, crevasses and de struction of property and crops in that State , than has ever before been known. The stage of water in the Mississippi rose seven inches higher than at any previous period. Killed by Virus from a Felon. A woman in Laper, Mich., took her husband's knife a few days ago to open a felon ; shortly after her husband used the knife to extract a sliver from his hand, and inoculated himself with the virus of the felon. His hand began to swell and In four hours he was a raving tnanian, and in less than forty-eight hours died. Killed with au Oil Can. A man named. Laws, at Mazomauie, Wis., lost his life recently in a singular manner.
