Family Murdered.
St. Louis, JIuicli 22. A family of five
persona, who lived near Centrevillo, St.
Clair county, 111., wore murdered last week.
The name of the victims are Fritz Stclzcn
rlede, aged 80 years, his son and daughter-in-law,
and two small children, one an in
fant. The dead bodies were discovered
about G o'clock on Friday evoning. Tho
throats of the two men were cut, and the
skulls of the woman nnd children were
crushed in.
Yesterday Sheriff Hughes of St. Clair
county went to tho scene of the tragedy,
but obtained no clue to the assassins. The
bouse is some distance from any other
dwelling. It is believed that the murdors
were committed on Thursday night, as the
bodies of Mrs. Stelzenriedo and her chil
dren were in bed when found, and that of
iier husband on the floor beside a lounge
on which be slept. The beads of tho men
were nearly severed from their bodies, while
those of the mother and children were
crushed with some blunt instrument. The
County Court hnsoflcred a reward of f 1,000
for the capture of the murderers.
At the inquest yesterday afternoon held
by Coroners Ryan of East St. Louis, sev
eral witnesses were examined, and facts
elicited which led to the belief that Fred
erick Boeltz, husband of a sister of Mrs.
8te1zenricde, committed the horrible deed.
He was present but refused to testify until
forced, and then his answers and general
conduct were such as to excite the strong
est suspicion of bis guilt. He acknowl
edged that he bad been on bad terms with
the murdered family somo months, that
be entertained feeling of enmity toward
them, and was in tho old man's debt several
hundred dollars. The fact that the bouse
was not ransacked nor pillaged, and that
the old man's money was untouched, es
tablished beyond a doubt that tho minder
was not committed for plunder, and tonded
more strongly to fasten the suspicion upon
Boeltz.
Sleainhout Explosion.
Memphis, March 24. A special dispatch
to the Appeal from Helena, Ark., to-day,
ays the towboat Crescent City from New
Orleans for St. Louis, having in tow five
freight barges, one fuel barge and trading
boat, laden with thirteen tons of sugar,
blew up at 8.30 A. M. to-day, at the foot
of Montezuma island, ten miles below here.
The boat was blown to atoms. The barges
were all consumed by fire. Tho following
is a list of the lost. James Dawson, cap
tain ; Henry Qessler, mate ; John Ostrader,
pilot and wife ; Dan Mettle, watchman ;
cabin boy, name unknown, three colored
firemen.
Wounded George Van Houton, leg dis
located ; Patrick Jiacon, second engineer,
bruised ; Wm. Dunn, second cook, scalded;
Petor Hall, proprietor of the trading boat,
badly bruised.
Hall's family wero all (saved, and are on
board the steamer, Phil. Allen, bound for
Memphis, as are also the wounded, wbo
are under treatment of physicians fiom
Friar's Point. The remainder of the crew
are with them, rendoring all tho assistance
they can. The Phil. Allen arrived at the
scene a few moments after the explosion
and rendered every assistance in his power.
The Cresent City was owned by the Mis
sissippi Valley Transportation Company,
and valued at $70,000.
A Part of London Inundated.
London, March 21. The extraordinary
rise in the tide of the Thames yesterday
caused great damage aloug the river. Lam
beth and Rotherhilhe were inundated.
Sewers burst, and the floors of many
bouses were forced up by tho water. Sev
eral children and a number of horses were
drowned at these places. At Wapping the
lower story of the bouses wero tilled with
water, and business on the wharves was
suspended. Numerous families were com
pelled to abandon their bouses. At the
Woolwich Arsenal the fires in the gun
factories were extinguished, and the con
tents of the store sheds wore flooded. An
other high rise of the tide is feared to-day,
And temporary embankments have been
erected to prevent a repetion of tho inun
ction. A Sorry Joke.
A youug mau named Mullen, who lived
near Winameg, Ohio, had been in the habit
of going to the store in the evening for bis
mail, and had on more than one occasion
been nunoyed by a certain dog bowling
near bis house. On h aving the house the
other night ho made the remark in the
presence of a young man by tho name of
Bird It. Flemmlng, who was living there,
that be was going to the store and if that
dog mado that noise again be was going to
shoot Lim. Flcinmiug got in advance of
Mullen some way, aud for the purpose of
scaring him imitated a dog, when Mullen
drew his revolver and fired, killing the
boy almost Instantly.
tW The Nai.hua(N. II.) Telegraph suys
the familiar sentence " One touch of na
ture" was beautifully illustrated by three
little girls who not long since lost their
mother by death. Hearing that a lady
friend of the family was dying, these three
little children went to their grandmother,
rolled ber aside and whispered in her ear:
"Mrs, is dying and we want you to go
to ber atu tell ber to give our best love to
cur mother,''. . .
