TorKKA, Kansas, Jan. 1, 1874, n. .t. t . msitujiM wne more year nag como and jrone,Rnl wfl have received your regular visits, alwnys anxiously looked for by all in our Kansas home. Here the past hns been a year of prosperity. In our young city there has been more expensive build, iugs put up than in any one year before, True the panic affected us, but we only notice it particularly, in the decline of goods of dilfcrent kinds. It has had the affect to turn capitalists to our wester country, seeking investments as surer and better than stocks or papor gambling. The last two weeks has brought us four men that represent one and one-half million dollars. Uur stcol and iron works partly hniNlied, has been bought by foreign cap italists for $81,000, and is to be completed and enlarged ; they have also bought our Iron King Bridge works. These works cover over four aci-cs. We have eigh banks, and two fine cut stone bank build ings were put up this summer. Pomeroy' trial for tho bribery of York, coinmcnccs to morrow. Fifteen cars of cattle wont east yesterday. Cattle dealers are happy, their cattle have fed on the prairie up to tnis time. 1 his has been a remarkable mild winter, and on New Year's day we set with our doors open. Our town is full oi giiiiie; jjuuaio meat by tlie wagon load, elk, door, antelope, quail, prairie chicken &c. Hut what seems strangest to me is, that j ust as soon as they get plenty, no uho wains uiem. ileal estate mon say there is more property selling than tlior 1 ! iias ueen ior many years. .Last summer was dry and we had but about two-thirds of a crop, consequently farmers are getting good pi ices for all thoir products. With this advantage, and the Grange members in our Legislature, that meets on the 13lli, for once I feel they ought to be content, Heretofore there has been, I fear a mistake in our law makers in making our tax all payable from the 1st to the 10th of Jan- uary. It locks up two hundred and twenty. four thousand dollars of currency for some sixty days, nud injures business materially until it gets into circulation again. The younger portion of our citizens are having a pleasant winter as they always have, Among othor amusemcuts Is Dickens' parties, each guest taking a character. will unhesitatingly say to any one coming here that they will find as good and pleas ant a society as they can find in any country I have ever lived. Young man, do not settle down until you have seen the country west of the Mississippi or the Ar Kansas valley. I he trip need not nces- siarly cost you much money or time. As I said in a former lettor, the first of March is the host time to commence in a western Home, then you can raise a crop the Oitj year to live on. The first of May with a favorable summer, however, may do. T. B. TnoMPSON. Hens Laying While at Boost. Eggs are very frequently dropped while tue liens are upon the roosts. The only remedy is to place the roosting poles low, and have a soft layer of sawdust or chopped straw beneath the hens. Soft egos are In dicative of an excited condition of the ovary from over feeding, at least when plenty of lime is given. Reduce the feed, aud give only oats, and no meat, cooked feed, or popper for a week or two. Holding up tho Milk. We have found the most effective plan to get the milk down when a cow is in clined to witb-hold it, is to treat the cow gently and give her a pail of bran, shop, or some feed more than ordinarly entieing to her appetite. A handful of salt given to tue cow at such a time often helps to briug the milk. is Ducicwneat Dian wnen ted to cows will produce a large quantity of milk, but uju mine win ue as mm as water and of a bluish color. Meal of peas, wheat and corn will make the richest milk and of a yellow color.' Meal of peas aud wheat bran will make excellent feed.. CSTAn English farmer, in examiulng laUily an unpuiuted larch gate put up more man iweury years ago, iouna 1C in a very serviceable state without repair. A neigh bor put up at the snnie timo a larch and an oaken gate-post, and found the lurch post lusted the longest. k.-S' iiieainuts can oe preserved any length of timo by siini,ly jiuttitr them in a bag or box, und sprinkling common salt among them.
