Scaring Shoemaker.
An old French shoemaker, who boasted
that nothing could frighten him, was put
to the test by two young men. One of
them pretended to bo dead, and the othor,
going to the shocmakor induced him to
"sit up" with the supposed corpse. The
shoemaker was in a hurry with some work
be bad promised to have completed the
next morning. Bo he took his tools and
leather and began working beside the
corpse. About 12 o'clock at night a cup
of black coffee was brought him, to
keep bim awako. Ha drank it and resumed
work. About one o'clock tho coffee, having
exhilorated him, forgotting that he was in
the presence of death, he commenced to
sing a lively tune, keepitig time with bis
hammer. Suddenly tho corpse arose and
exclaimed, in a hollow voice: "When a
man is in tho presence of death be should
not sing." The shoemaker started ; then
quietly seizing bis stout leather strap, he
suddenly dealt the corpse a blow on the
head, exclaiming at the same time : "When
a man is dead he should not speak." It
was the last time the;- tried to scare the
shoemaker.
tW Jurymen heard a long case in court,
the testimony, the attorney's speeohes, the
judge's charge, aud all. The jury retired,
to render their verdict. It was a case of
against the supervisors of a town
ship. Well, the jurymen began to count
noses to see how they stood. One was for
convicting Jenkins and clearing Brown.
Another for convicting both ; and some for
clearing both. Finally the question was.
put to Ilonas Joklo, what was his judg
ment.
" Veil," said Ilonas, " I doesh not agree
mit none of you. Jenkins and Brown may
bote go for me ; I don't dink as dey proof
ed anydings against dem. But dere is.
