The Meanest Yet. 1 1 i
There is, Unfortunately no lack of mean
men within the world, and every little
while there springs up in eome small 'town
a claimant for . the honor of being tho
meanest man yet discovered. We now
desire to confer upon the aforesaid yet
another 'local habitation and name.'
In the town of 8 ' , Mass., lived two
families in adjoining houses. They
bad been neighbors aud friends for years ;
but at last the lioad of one family , was
taken sick with typhoid fever and died,
All the rest of the household lay danger
ously ill with tho same disease, and the
oldest son followed bis father so soon that
one funeral served for both.
Sometime during the illness of their
friends the family lu the adjoining house
bad loaned the former two old-fashioned,
yellow earthen-ware bowls which had ot
as yet been returned. ' As the funoral pro
cession moved down the main street of the
village, it passed the store kept by the
owner of the precious crockery. Rushing
out he stopped the front carriage ' which
contained the brother of tho deceased,
whom he accosted in this manner :
4 1 s'pose you're Squire Seal's brother ?
'Yes, sir.'
' Wal, I kinder thought you might know
su'thin' 'bout two yaller bowls my wifo
lent his'n. Bern' sick so, I s'pose they
kinder forgot 'bout 'era an' '
" All right, sir ; thoy shall be seen to.
But this is no time to talk about anything
of that kind."
' I know I know j but I only wanted to
say that I'd jist as soon not have 'em Bent
back, seen'n as how they've been used
round in the sick room ; but I'll take tho
pay for 'em instead. They cost me five
cents apiece and's long's they were jist
about as good's as new, I 'sposo you won't
begrudge pay in' me the same's I giv for
'em seein', too, as they've bed the use of
'em so long.'
The ten cents he claimed was banded
him without a word, and the procession
passed on.
Can't Jndge by Appearances.
