"No, sir," said the extempore money taker, naively, she's my father." ' IS? On one of the trips of a California, steamer, the stearage passengers were so numerous as to make them uncomfortable. The sleeping accommodations were aptly described by a Californian, who approached the captain and said : " I should like to have a sleeping birth, if you please." " Why where have you been sleeping these last two nights since we left ?" , " Wa'al, I've been sleeping on top of a sick man, but he's got better now, and won't stand it no longer." tW A lot of minstrels went to a town not far away and .advertised to give a per formance for the benefit of tho poor, tickets reduced to ten cents." The hall was crammed full. The next morning a com mittee for the poor called upon the concern for the amount said benefit had netted. Tho treasurer expressed astonishment at the demand. " 1 thought," said the chairman of I the committee, "you advertised this concert for the benefit of the poor." Re plied the treasurer : "Did't we put the tickots down to ton cents, so that the poor could all come ?" The committee vanished. Perhaps tho following from a for eign paper will serve to " tickle" some of onr readeis : A lawyer, a celebrated wit, was pleading before a Scotch Judge, with whom he was on the most intimate terms, happening to)have a client (a female by the name of Tlclc) defendant in an action, be commenced bis speech in the following humorous strain : "Tide, my client, tho dofendant, my lord." The auditors, amus ed with the oddity of the speech, were almost driven into hysterics by the judge replying: "Tickle her yourself, Harry ; you are just as able to do it as I." An amusing anecdote is told in con nection with one of the Arundel owls. On one occasion at a dinnor at Arundol Castle, the butler caused great merriment by coming iuto the room and saying in a solemn voice : " May . it please your grace, Lord Thurlow has laid an egg" The late Duke of Norfolk was asked if the story was true. His grace said i " Yes, we have always believed it in the family ; but do you know why the bird was called Lord Thurlow ? That's almost the best part of the story. Lord Thurlow and his daughter were once staying at the castle, and tho young lady went to see the owls. On passing one of them she stopped suddenly and exclaimed : " OU ! how like papa !" and the bird was ever afterwards called Lord Thurlow." It must havo been a very wise looking bird, for Lord Thurlow looked ' exceptionally wlso, even for a judge. Fox, the statesman, once said : "I suppose no man was ever so wise as Thurlow looks." The learned aud popular Judge B. now in the Supreme Bench of California, was recently trying a case where a farmer claimed damages against a mining com pany for blowing vailings on the farmer's land, A witness testified as to the effect of a stick lying in the stream of water car rying the vailings and obstructing the same. Judge B (to witness). " How largo was the stiok you speak off" Witness. " I don't recollect." Judge B . " Can't you approximate tothesiwr" Witness. "Well no j I didn't measure it." Judge B -(growing impatient). " Well, sir, was it as thick as my wrist ?" Witness. " Well, yes, somewhat larger; from my recollection, now, I should judgo it to have been about as thick as your head." A jocular expression seemed to play upon the features of tho audience, the size of the stick having been fairly approximated.
