Cuff was a gentleman's gontloman down
in Virglnia, nnd a darkey of most undoubt
ed honesty and truth ; but lie would some
times tell tough stories. He met " Kunel
Johnson's nigg," as be called him, the
other day, and after cussing and discuss
ing various matters appertaining to their
masters, tbey foil into the following con
versation :
Sam Well, Cuff, how you was ?
Cuff Oh 1 1 isn't no was.
Bam How is all de folks down nt do

Cuff Oh, dey is able to be round, 'cop,
de ole man's darter ; she had the doctor
the other day. lie came in, looked nt her,

of engine wcgotttble pills. When de doctor

She wouldn't take no pills no, sah ! Wal,

"Bilcd him an hour, sah."
" Tako him away an' bile him anoder

So 1 took him and biled him anoder

Sam Did the company wait?"
Cuff Of course dey waited. I brought

But it was no go ; massa git mad.

Dey were bound to see de fun out, yer

A Lady's mistake.
Rather touching is this : In a neigh-,
boring county of New Jorsey Mrs.A. enter
ed a house where a funeral was to be held.
Walking up to the coffin she looked the de
ceased steadily, and muttered, "Very
much changed I" She seated herself, but
soon arose and took a second look, repeat
ing the remark. A third time she looked,
and exclaimed, " How changed
" Madam," said a by-slander, " this is
John West's body ; Nancy Green's funeral
is next door !"
And she went out from thence unto the
the neighboring structure.
t3S Out West recently, a girl backed out
of her marriage engagement when the min
ister got to the bouse. The bridegroom
wasn't one of the broken-hearted kind,
lie turned to the assembled ladies, and
said : " If there's ary another gal hero
that'll occupy this vacant situation, I'm
her'n." Up jumped the sister of the lady
who had doclinod to be n bride saying:
"Count me in. Proceed, old text ftlinger,
with the performance. I ain't afraid."
And the ceremony was performed to the
delight of the groom and company.
t3TA. gentleman lately complimented his
lady on bur improved appearance.
"Your're guilty of flattery," said the la
dy. "Not so," replied he; "for you are as
plump as a partridge."
"At first, she said, "I thought you guil
ty of flattery only; but now I find you actu
ally make game of me."
tWTho Governor of Illinois recently
pardoned a convict because tbey said ha
was dying of consumption. That pardon
did more for that young man than would
have been done by a dozen bottles of cod
liver oil. In twenty-four hours his lungs
were as sound as if they had been made of
brass.
t3T A gentleman being asked by an old
lady with rather confused ideas as to hotsea
and dogs, if his dog was a hunter, said,
it was half hunter and half setter; that ha
hunted until he found a bone, and then set
down to eat it."
IW In struggling to make a dull-brained
boy understand what ootiscienoe is, a teach
er finally asked, "What makes you feel un
comfortable after you have done wrong?"
"My papa's big leather strap," feelingly
replied the boy.
What requires more philosophy thaa
taking things as they come? " Parting with
them as they go.
t3T A man who wanted to be a minister
Said he believed he had been oallod "ts ta
bor in the Lord's barn yard.
