Jonah Filclier, is the town clerk of North Bergen. He had the misfortune to have been the victim of an accident which bns shortened one of his legs several inches. Whou Jonah stands on his right leg he is about six feet high. 'When on his loft be is about four feet six. Now it happened the other day that Jonah want ed his bitters, and be went into a gin mill near to got them. After he bad stopped up to the counter, be supported himself on his left leg and liis chin scarcely reached above the counter. The barkeeper looked down upon his diminutive customer : " What will you have ?" he asked. " Give me brandy sour," replied Jonah. The barkeeper went to the other end of the bar to prepare the decoctiou. Ho was some time about it, and Jonah, tired of standing upon bis left foot, elevated him self on his right, a foot and a half. The barkeeper returned and looking at the tall Jonah didn't recognize bim, " Where in thunder 1" he said, " has that little sucker gone who just ordered a brandy sour ?" "What's the matter?" asked Jonah. " Why," was the reply, a little fool came here and ordered brandy sour, aud while I was making it Ire walked out." "Never mind," said Jonah, "I'll tako it." And Jonah took it. While ho drank he lowered himself on his left foot, and the barkeeper for the first time saw how he had been fooled. When Jonah drew out his twenty cents for the treat, tho barkeep er told him it was all right. That sell was worth twice the money. . r - tW The following pathetic lines are supposed to have emanated from tho obit uary genius of the Philadelphia Ledger : " Tho death angel smote Alexander McGlue, And gave him protracted repese ; He wore a checked shirt and a number nine shoe And be had a pink wart on his nose. No doubl he Is happier dwolllng In space Over there on the evergreen shore, Bis friends are informed that his funeral takes place Precisely at quarter past four !" tW Bibbs was married the other day to a very quiet, not to say stupid girl, with a face like a doll's. Some one remarked to MulTington that Bibbs had been on the lookout for a wife for sometime, and had now " wooed and won." Mufflngton said, "Yes, woodon one, that's just what sho is." tW A dashing belle of Green Bay, a. Miss Ruth Taylor, a few days since wa presented with a silk dress for her gallant ry in taking hold of a spanner and helping pull tho engine to a fire. The firemen have bad to add two hundred feet to the rope since then. All the girls want silk dresses. A wife wanted her husband to sym pathize with her in a feminine quarrel, but he refused, saying, " I've lived long enough to learn that one woman is just as good as another, if not better." " And It" retort ed the exasperated wife, " have lived long enongh to loam that one man is just as bad as another, if not worse !" ' C3T " How does that look, eh ?" said a big fisted Wall-street man to a friend hold ing up one of his brawny bands, "That," said his friends, "looks as though you'd got' short' on your soap." tW A Milesian astonished a grocer by entering bis store with this request : "Mister M'Gra, would you lend mo an empty barrel of flour to make a hen coop fur mo dog?" tW ' I say, Pat, where did you get that rogue's hat?" "Please, your honor," said Put, " 'tis an old one of yours that missus gave me yesterday when you wont to town." ty A cheerful giver put tho following- note in a pair of pantaloons sont to the Michigan sufferers : "There, take 'em; last pair I've got. Tlou't get burned out again." 13?" " Why do you uso paint ?" asked a violinist of his daughter. " For the same reason that you use roin, papa." ' How'g that ?" " Why, to help me draw my beau 1" OT " Cuffee, is that the second boll?" " No massa, dat's de second ringing of do fuss bell. We liabn't got no second bell in dis hotel." tar What cord is that, which is full of knots which no one can untie, and in which no one can tie anotlior? A cord of wood. t2T A matt in Norfolk street, ia the eity lately advertised : " One basement to let in dis house in der third sthory." tST A man's dearest object should bo his wife, but sometimes it is lis wifo'a wardrobe.
