NEW BLOOMFIELD, PENN'A.
Tuesday, September 23, 1873.
CniCAGO has again been visited with flro
doing damage amounting to half a million
of dollars. It occurred on the 17th inst.,
and broke out in the liny depot of tho Chi
cago & Burlington R. R., burning over
four blocks before it could bo extinguished.
TriE Constitutional Convention is ngaiu
in session, having resumed business again
on last Tuesday. Should they stretch out
Ibe dobntes, as they did In the spring
sossions, tho pcoplo will soon tire of read
ing of their doings, and become disgusted
with the new constitution, and docide
against it before tho convention adjourns.
W amies Is much excited over the prob
able termination of the land suit now con
tested in court for tho third time, between
tho Irvine and Biddle hoirs and Buck and
Noble. There is a large amount at stake
and a precedent to bo established. Nearly
fifty years ago certain portions of this tract
was entered upon tho list as unseated and
sold for taxes. This land is situate across
the river at Tidiouto. There were 200 acres
upon which there had been Bome improve
.monts, and, as the law demanded at that
"time, positive surveys made at the time of
:sale to protect adjoining tracts, it is claim-
ed by one party that such survey was made.
'This party brought from tho west a man
vho swears he was with the surveyor when
iho lines were rondo and points out the
witness tree. Soveral other surveyors are
'brought forward to provo thore was no such
.survey. The witness tiee wasfound, and
with a surface smooth and unbroken.
Still tho western roan Insists that was the
treo, and that the tree was marked. At
Hast this tree was opened, and singularly
onough inside was found the traces of tho
axe that cannot be controverted. This tree
has long hidden valuable evidences.
A Financial Panic.
During the past four days there has boon
unusual excitemont in financial circles.
Tho commencement of tho trouble was
caused by the failure of Jay Cooke & Co.,
whoso banking houses are located in Now
York, Philadelphia and Washington, with
Foreign branches in London and Paris. At
11 o'clock on Thursday the doors of tho
Philadelphia banking house were closed,
and in less than half an hour nn excited
crowd had gathered so that Third street
was almost impassible.' Messrs Cooke &
Co., say their suspension is only temporary
and that thoy have assets enough to secure
every depositor against loss. Half an hour
later in the day the banking houso of E.
W. Clark & Co., closed. Tho day follow
ing Dellavon & Bro., suspended and the
failure of sevoral prominent brokers was
announced.
In New York sevoral well known bank
ers and about twenty brokers have failed,
though up to the time this was written no
tank in that city has stopped payment
though a severe run was made on the
"Union Trust Company."
On Saturday the goneral feeling among
bankers was, that the worst of the panio
was over. All that is needed, is for the
public to have confidence in the parties
with whom they deposit, and in a short
time, ull will be woll again. Should do
lositors however, make a sudden demand
, for their balances, the necessary result
would be a general suspension, as no bank
oau pay dividends by keeping the funds of
their depositors in their vaults. A general
rush would make it impossible for them to
roalitte on their securities, and cause a
shrinkage in values that would be disas
trous. Important to Druggist.
In a letter to Supervisor Alex. P. Tut-
ton, of Philadelphia, the commissioner of
iuternal revenue states that "medicines and
medicinal preparations, to be exempt from
tlip stamp tax, must not bo patent or pro
prietary. They must not bo put up in a
stylo or manner similar to that of patent
or proprietary medicines. ' They must not
be advertised as having any special pro
priotai7 claim to merit, etc. They must
not be sold or offered for sale, or advertised
under any olhor namo, form or guise than
that demonstrated and laid down in the
.authorized published medical works or
journals. Whoever departs from these
plain and simple rules In making, prepar
ing, recommending to thepublio, and vend
ing, or offering or exposing his medicines,
etc., for sale, has no claim under the- law
to exemption from the stamp tax."

The Arctic Expedition.
A vessol which arrived in Liverpool last
week, brings the missing portion of Capt.
Hall's arctio expedition. The ' rescued
Polaris party report that after separation
from Tyson and his companions, the Po
laris was finally abandoned in a sinking
condition by Captain Buddington, and the
remainder of the expedition. The party
wintered in Lifo-Boat cove, whore thoy
built a timber houso, which they covered
with sails. The wintor passed without
evont, except tho breaking out of scurvey,
which, however,, was unattended by severe
symptoms. Plontiful supplies of walrus
liver for food were obtained from tho na
tives, and to this is attributed the mildness
of the disease. In tho spring two boats
wore built of thin pine boards taken from
the cabin of the Polaris. On these tho
whole party embarked, as soon as the ice
opened, and sailed southward. On 8d of
June they sighted Capo York, and on June
22nd wore picked up by the whaler Ravens
craig. Tho following additional particu
lars have been obtained from the rescued
crew of tho Polaris. The Polaris drifted
into Life-Boat cove, and was beached there
with difficulty. The Esquimaux assisted
in bringing provisions from tho wreck, and
readily sold Bkins and clothing to tho men
while the boat building was going on.
Tho mercury frequently marked twenty
three degrees below zero. During the voy
ago southward ice was once encountered
oit Northumberland Island and a delay of
three days was caused, twenty miles north
of Cape York, by adverse winds.
As to the statement that the ship might
have aided the party on tho ice, all agree
that it was impossible after tho Polaris
broke adrift to learn tho whereabouts of
those loft behind. Every effort was made
to find them but to no avail.
The ships sent out to rescue this party,
will now bo recalled.
A Dreadful Predicament.
Recently, at a late hour of the night, the
people domiciled in a woll-known lodgiug
houso in Utica, were aroused by calls for
help proceeding from one of the rooms,
and a general uprising, donning of gar
ments, and rush to tho sccuo took place.
There a sight mot their gaze which arous
ed tho mirth of the men and caused the
women to beat a hasty retreat. From over
the transom of tho door to ono of tho bed
rooms protruded a pair of musculino legs,
clad but in an undergarment, while a
faint voice from the inside reiterated the
calls for assistance. The men workod
promptly, but it was several minutes be
fore the unfortunate could be rescued from
his disagreeable predicament, and when
taken down he was nearly exhausted from
suffocation. It appears that ho had re
turned home late, but, late as ho was, his
room-mate was still out and ho had the
key with him. Anxious to get to bed, and
not wishing to make any more noiso than
could bo helped, our friend disrobed him
self to avoid tearing his garments and to
facilitate his movements, and endeavored
to enter the room through the transom.
After no got half through his courago fail
ed him at tho prospect of diving to the
floor, and ne twisted and squirmed to se
cure an easy descent, the result being that
he finally cot upon his back and hung
thore, head down, unablo to got out or in,
and, the blood rushing to his head, he was
eventually forced to call for help. Ho is
going to carry tue key Himself norcalter.

The Selinsgrovo, Timet says : Thursday
evening, 11th inst., a party of men from
Millersburg, Dauphin Co., who were en
gaged in towing a lot of timber rafts down
the canal, tied up in this borough after
dark for the night.
They stretched their lines across the
public road leading to the Maine sawmill,
above Schoch & Bi o's warehouse, and fas
tened them to the willows along the road.
Mr. A. M. Carey and wife, having no
knowledge of this obstruction, drove up
the road on their way homo at a fair trot
in an open buggy, and ono of the ropes
struck them on their necks and caused a
serious turmoil for a short time. Mrs,
Carey was not much hurt, but Mr. Carey,
bad his throat seriously damaged, and it
looked as though he had just slipped the
gallows. The harness broke and the horse
left the buggy, dragging Mr. Carey out
over the dasher by tho lines. All of which
happened in about two seconds. Tho raft
ing party were found at the hotel, and they
settled their mistake by paying five dollars
to repair damage to harness, etc.
Terrible Railroad Disaster Twenty Per
sous Killed.
Grand Rapids, Sept. 10 Midnight.
The express train going east on tho De
troit and Milwaukee railroad, which left
Grand Rapids at 0.00 o'clock p. m., con
sisting of thirteen coaches and one baggage
car, ran off the track between Lowell and
Ada.. It is rumored that the entire train
went into a ditch, killing twenty persons
and wounding many others. Physicians
are now leaving for the scene of the disas
ter, and preparations are being hastily
mode for the relief of the sufferers.
t2T An amateur "shootist" in Sorauton,
fired off his pistol at the sido of a big
house, but missed it, and managed to hit
Mrs. Fred. Rohr in the arm.' The ball pass
ed within au inch of the head of an infant
which Mrs. Rohr was holding in her arms
at the lime.
Au Ingenious Sportsman.
v An ingenous Minnesota youth is to be
credited with a novelty in the way of duck
hunting. Ho lives at a beautiful spot
known as Rice Lake, from the wild rice
growing on its margin as thick as wheat in
a field. Ducks love this rice, and when
they have partaken of a sufficient quantity
their flosh becomes of a nature to tempt
the palate of an anchorito. But the Rice
Lako ducks, either from experience or an
instinct which may bo said to be wisdom
intensified, do not liko human company,
and when they see a hunter approaching
generally hasten out of gunshot range.
Dick, tho youth before alluded to, was
particularly fond of ducks, and looked with
contempt upon tho futile efforts of his sire
to provide the tablo with this delicacy, ne
determined to have some ducks for dinner
if it took all the morning to accomplish the
task. Proceeding to the cornfield he se
lected a largo pumpkin, cut a hole in one
end, removed the internal arrangements,
carried it down to the shore, divested him
self of his clothes, placed the pumpkin over
his head, and waded in among the rioo. In
a short time the fat and tender pioneer of a
flock of ducks approached, and imagining
tho vcgotablo to be free from guile, en
couraged the others to follow.
They were partaking of their matutinal
meal, when astonishmont struck them at
tho Bight of the pioneer suddenly diving
not that thore is anything astonishing in a
duck diving but this one dived feet fore
most and neglected to come up. A com
mittee of one was appointod to investigate,
and approaching tho pumpkin, suddenly
mode a backward divo, and was gone.
This was enough for the others. They fled
in dismay, aud henceforth numbored as
among their deadliest terrors the innocent
ingredient of Now England pics.
