Where he was Going.
A celebrated preacher who had been
holding a aeries of revival meetings in a
town on the canal, while walking along the
towpath one day came across a boatman
who was swearing furiously. Marching up,
he confronted hira abruptly and asked :
" Bir, do you know where you are go
ing?" , . !
The unsuspecting man innocently replied
that he was going up the canal on the boat
Johnny Bands,
"No sir, you are not," continued the
preacher ; " you are going to hell faster
than a oanal boat can convey you.", .
The boatman looked at him in astonish
ment for a minute, and then returned the
question : . ;
"Sir, do you know where yon are go
ing?".
" I expect to go to heaven."
" No sir, you are going into the canal !"
And suiting the action to the word, he
took the minister in his arms and tossed
him into the murky waters, where he
would have drowned had not the boatman
relented and fished him out.
Quick W ilted.
The proverbial quickness of Irish wit
is illustrated by an anecdote related by
Captain A. Whilst on the Peninsula, dur
ing the war, he came across a private be
longing to one of the most predatory com-.
panies of the Irish brigades, with the life
less bodies of a goose and hen, tied togeth-
by the feet, dangling from.liis musket.
"Whore did you steal those, you rascal?"
he demanded. "Faith, I was marching
along wid Color Sargeaut Maguire, and
tho goose bad 'cess to it 1 came out and
hissed the American flag." "But tho
hen, sir, how about the hen?" "It's the
hin, is it ? The bin, bless ye, was in bad
company, and laying eggs for the rebels."

Once a careless man went ' to tho
cellar aud stuck the candle in what he sup
posed was a keg of black sand. He Bat
near it drinking wine ' until the candle
burned low ; nearer and nearer it got to
the black sand ; nearer and nearer, until
the blaze reached the contents of the kegv
when suddenly the candle tipped over, and.
the light went out, aud did no harm, for
there was nothing, but sand in the keg.

store on Washington street, to buy a rose
bud for his affianced. ' Seventy-five cents
was the price asked. '' ..i ..
" Will it keep ?" inquired the young
man. ; . i . .
, "Oh, yes, along while.!' . , ;
" Then you may keep it." Exit young
