8 )t Slimes Nciu JSlaomftelir, J)a. 0 SOLD. A Stockton, (Col.) paper tells the follow ing good joke : "Where the road between Merced and Snelling crosses tbe Merced river that stream is about two hundred yards in width, and even at this season of tho year, when the water is quite low, it looks like a dangerous and deop stream to cross. A short time since, a patent medicino agent, traveling on horseback through that sec tion, came to the river and hesitated about attempting to ford it as he saw the wide ex panse of rushing waters. There is no bridge anywhere along there, so after some indecision he concluded to swim his horse across. Spying a boy fishing in a small punt tied to the bank, he said : "Hello, bub!" "Hollo, yourself." " Can I get you to take my clothes across the river in your boat?" "I rekin you kin, if you'vo got any soap." " All right, I'll give you a quarter to take over my clothes and this carpot-Back to the opposite shore." To this the boy nodded assent, and tho stranger disrobed, turned over the carpet sack and habiliments to the juvenile, who paddled out into the stream, and mounted . bis horso, prepared to swim the river and enjoy the luxury of a bath. With a splash at every moment, the horse stepped into the stream and walked across the water was nowhere more than eighteen inches deep ! To say that that medicine man, perched on the back of his horso, was a man of iniquity for the space of half an hour would hardly do justice to the occa sion. There were enough " dams" along the Merced that aftornoon to supply a hun dred mill-sites." The Atlantic Balloon. The Graphic Balloon for the trip to Eu rope, is to be ready by the 10th or the 15th inst., every preparation is being rapidly pushed forward. A few days since Prof. Donaldson, the aeronant left New York for Long Branch, in the canoe which is to be attached to the balloon in the voyage across the Atlantic. Two miniature sails were spread on a bamboo most, with which and a broad paddle for steering the voy ager began his travels. The waters of the upper bay were passed successfully, and tbe canoeist spent tho night in his boat on the shore of Staten Island. Next morn- , ing he resumed his trip in the teeth of a a high sea under a northeast wind. Tem- . porary landings were made at Red Bank and Coney Island. From the latter point along the coast to Long Branch the voy age was made in a sea that often hid the little craft in the trough. Off tho Branch its strange rig made it the principal object of interest, and a great multitude oollectod when it was headed for shore. It reached the Branch without accident until in the j last breaker it was fairly submerged, com ing up without its crew and freight The . professional bathers rushed in and draggod Professor Donaldson out,and tbe next wave washed ashore the canoe and its scattered , contents. A York County Hermit, , Tbey have a genuine hermit in York county. He is about fifty years old, does j not shave, considering it wrong to do so. Ho abandoned business some years ago, , and renounced all intercourse with the world, Ho lives alone in a small log house 14 by 10 feet, with a loft above, in which he sleeps, and a small pit beneath the low er floor, in which he stows his winter vege tables. His house cost him only $ 11.50, He cultivates an aero of ground, and raises more on it than he can consume. He eats no meat, grinds his own grain in a band mill, does his own cooking, and dispenses with a table, eating out of the vessel in which his food is cooked. Tho whole cost of his living he estimates at thirty cents a week, or sixteen dollars a year. His fur niture , consists of three chairs, a dosk, a bureau with drawers, a saucepan and ket tle, a bucket, a pitcher, one earthen dish, and some cups made of cocoanut shells. He drink's nothing with bis meals, and but water at any time. His house is kept scrupulously clean, and he seems to be per fectly contented. He raises more than he can consume upon bis acre of ground, and sells tbe overplus. He has thus laid by money, which he puts out at interest. He is said to have been led to this method of life by reading the works -of Fowler and Wells upon vegetable diet. His name is George Gite, and he has brothers who are noted for their activity in life, one being a prominent merchant In Hanover, and the other a prominent civil engineer. Terrible Storm In Aova Scotia. ' A terrible storm last week visited Nova Scotia. Private dispatches received state that the storm was the most severe ever experienced in that section of the country. Over 100 miles of the Montreal telegraph wire was blown down, and there was a fearful destruction of bridges, trees, tele graph wires and poles from Dorchester, New Brunswick, to Pluister Caver. Trees were blown down In all directions, and the wires blown across them and tangled up. Great destruction of property is reported at ShedUo, and the prevailing opinion there was that the storm was even more violent further east.
