A Mnrdcr Its Defense.
Sometime ago a farmer named Samuol
went into the office of B. A. Marchant, in
Ban Francisco, 'and shot him down while
he was counting money at his desk, and
- 1 TTT
then walked out ana gave iiiraHeu up. o
noted the fact at the time. Samuel has
been in jail ever ince, until a few 4ays ago,
when the Grand Jury sot him free, failing
to And a bill against him. Samuel himself
made a statement before the jury, and he
had seventeen witnesses to substantiate it.
1 There was more, but the gentlemen of
the jury had heard enough. They told
Samuol to go, and they felt like giving him
a medal for having performed a great
service to society by killing Marchant. It
is one of the most terrible stories of wrong
ever heard, as the truth may be hinted as
well as told. Samuel had two daughters,
Emma and Ida, pretty school girls, one 15
and the other 14 years old.
One was at a boarding-school and the
other went to school in San Francisco, and
lived in Merchant's family. It is sufficient
to say that Marchant bad got both these
girls completely and entirely in his power.
Marchant' letters to the one in the semi
nary, of some of which Samuel had ob
tained possession, revealed the state of that
case. The other was just as bad, and both
exhibited a moBt depraved system of
treachery and abuse of hospitality prac
ticed ever since tho oldest girl was 0 years
old.
The father recalled both of his daughters
home, and sent word to Marchant that he
never wanted to see him again. Marchant
paid him a visit, however, and seemed de
termined to keep up his intimacy with the
family. BamueCs wife, the girts' mother,
is in Texas, insane ; and, as his daughter's
only protector, he went to Sau Francisco on
purpose, and walked into Marcliant's oflice
and shot. The Grand Jury could not Bee
any murder iu such an act of family de
fense s tills.
