Robert Simpson, the Scotch mathemati cian, was noted for his absent-mindedness. He used to sit at his open window on the ground floor, deep in geometry, and when accostedby a beggor, would arouse himself, hear a few words of the story, make his donation and dive. Some wags one day stopped a mendicant on his way to the window with" Now do as I tell you, and you will got something from that gentleman and a shilling from us besides. He will ask you who you are, and you will say, 'Robert Simpson, of Kirktonhill." The man did as he was told ; Simpson gave him a coin, dropped off. He soon roused him- -self, aud said : " Robert Simpson I son of John Simpson, of Kirktonhill ! why that is myself 1 that must be an imposter I" Topham Beouclork was a strangely absent-minded person. One day he had a party coming down to dinner, and just before their arrival he went up stairs to change his dress. He forgot all about them, thought it was bed time, and got into bed. A servant, who entered bis room to tell him his gueBt were waiting for him, found him'fast asleen. Another case ofjabsenco of mind , was that of a young woman in Portland, who was sent by her mother to buy a pair of shoes, and instead of buying them married the shoemaker. It was a week before she discovered her mistake, and even then did not cry about it. An absent minded person once dined out at a stranger's table, got up after dinner, and apologized to the company for tho meanness of tho fare and the 4etestablo cooking. A Dissatisfied Customer. ' The Colonel had been recommended to take horseback exercise for the benefit of his health, by his nhysician, and according ly applied at a well known stable for the animal. In about three hour he returned, covered with -dust and prespiration, and, with the assistance of one of tho hostlers, slowly and painfully descended from his steed. "How much?" "Three dollars, colonel." He slowly drew his wallet, and laid down the required sum, " Shall you want the horse again to-morrow, Colonel ?" " No ; I shant want him any more at all." " Indeed," said the stable-keeper, with a twinkle in his eye, as he noticed the Colo nel holding on to his lacerated body. " Perhaps the horse don't suit you." "O, yes," said Barnes, quickly ; "there is nothing tho matter with the horse ; he's all right. It's the price I object to." " The price 1" said the stable-keeper ; " why I only charged you three dollars, Colonel, which we consider cheap for the horse's services all the afternoon." "Well, I don't," squealed Barnes, rub bing his aching body ; " for whenever I want anything of this kind again, I know a big lumberman who will kick me all day for half the money." tW During the war, one of the North ern hotel keepers was on a visit to Norfolk. The eggs came to the table boiled hard. " Look here,'' said the hotel keeper, " Sambo, these eggs are boiled too hard4 Now take my watch and boil them three minutes by it." - " He gave the negro his splendid goftf watch. In about five minutes, the frced man returned with the ectr and watch on the same plate. The watch was wet. " What have you been doing with 'my watch?" asked the Northern visitor. Why, it's all wet." " Yes, sah," said the necro. "I biled the watch wid do eggs. All right dis time, salt tW A Dutchman once met an Irishman on a kmoly highway. As they met caoh smiled, thinking he know tho other. Pat, on seeing his mistake remarked, with a look of disappointment : " Faith, an' I thought it was me, an' it's naytbur of us." " Yaw, dat hh cliru. I am auudor man and you ish not yourself ; we pe potli somo other pomes." tW An Irish physician, was called to examine the corpse of another Irishman who had been assassinated by some of bis countrymen. "This person," said ho after inspecting the body," was so ill that if be had not been murdered he would have died half an hour before." IS?" A young widow down in Kennebec, Me., remarked at the funeral, " I hopo you'll excuse my not crying, but the fact is, crying always makes my nose bloed." She wid make an excellent mother-in-law. dTA gentleman being asked if his neighbor's dog was a hunter, said it was half hunter and half setter ; that he hunted until he found a bone aud then set down to eat it, tW A Dandy Inquired at a fruit stand : " Are these apples fit for a hog to eat' ?" " Try one and see," said the woman.' tlT A Brooklyn editor can't see why, if a brooklet means a little brook, that a tiamlet shouldn't mean a little ham.
