Graham, jr., of Carlisle, has beeu elected Senatorial delegate and Samuel N. Kramingor, of Mechauicsburg, representa tive delegate to repiesent Cumberland CO., iu the next Democratic State Convention. These delegates are under instructions to support Hon. J. II. Graham, of Carlisle, i for Supreme Judge. , Illinois has done a very sensible thing in providing that the trial of important criminal cases shall not hereafter be com mitted to non-reading, ignorant jurors. Tho new jury law provides " that it shall not be a cause of challenge that a juror has read in the newspapers an account of the commission of the crime with which the prisoner is charged, if such juror shall state on oath that ho believes he can render an impartial verdict according to the law and the evidence." It is no reflection on Republican prin ciples to say that the government is not served by the most competent subordinates which the country affords. Take the post office as an example. There never was the same amount of pilfering done in that department as is now perpetrated. Every mercnant mat you converse with, com plains of loss through the mails, and even money orders, which are supposed to be the safest, are stolen and destroyed ; and what is most strange in, when a mail rob ber is arrested and convicted of his crime, after Immense trouble on the part of the postal authorities, be is either given the lightest possible sentence or pardoned. The work done for the government in our navy yards is of a character to be worthless, though its cost Is treble that of the best work done by private yards on private ac count. Our arsenals are mora depositories where the public property is daily- decay ing and thus we could run through the catalogue, showing that there is a misman agement in those affairs which demands immediate revision and reform. Jlarrit burj Stale Journal. This may be no reflection on Republican principles, but to most readors the above article will seem to be a very severe re flection upon the practices of those whose duty it is to see that tho affairs of the Nation are properly conducted. Geo. Francis Train, Insane. In the Train case, last week, the court directed the jury to rendor a verdict of not guilty, on the ground of insanity. Train's counsel said two of the jurors say that is not their verdict. The court repli ed that the verdict is entered, and that part of the case is disposed of. Dr. Cross tes tified that this insanity continues, and Train must be sent to the State lunatio asylum. Mr. Train (excitedly), " I protest against - the proceedings here. I have been five months in jail without being granted a trial." Then addressing Judge Davis, he said, "Before leaving here I move your impeachment, in the name of the people." J udge Davis ordered him to sit down' and an order was made out to send him to the State lunatio asylum. Judge Faucher has granted a writ of fiaheui em-put returnable Thursday next, to show case why Train should uot be releas ed. IW A woman who was involved In the falling of the bridge at Dixon, Illinois, gave a curious description of her expe rience : "In the twinkling of an eye," she said, " There was a tremendous crash. and we were all spilled out. In the midst of it," the lady went on to say, " I went Into the water with a thud. I went down with tny mouth, opeu, screaming. I think I must have struck bottom. From the time I was spilled till I was dragged ashore seemed to me three hours. My ' back hair' is gone among the rest ; I shant advertise it ; the tinder is welcome to It, I am sure. A Cattle Drover Robbed of $1,000. The Kansas City Times, of the 10th lust., says: There is no use in disguising the fact that this city isr cursed with the pres ence of a mob of confidence operators aud robbers. Th'oy are not always here, nor, Indeed, have they any continuous abiding place, but their visits of late havo been so frequent, and their deeds committed with such Impunity, as to demand the most vigi lant and active efforts of the detective and patrol force. There is no disposition on the part of any good citizen to cast unde served blame upon tho police force, but its efliciency must be proved by acts before praise will be bestowed. On yestorday morning one of the most daring robberies ever attempted was ac complished in that city, and the victim, an experienced traveler, accustomed to be on his guard against the perils that beset moneyed travelers, but the sunning and adroitness of the deed made it successful. The following are the brief facts in the case: On last Thursday Mr. D. W. Golf, a cattle drover, of Oskalousa, Kansas, passed through this city with a drove which he took to St. Louis. lie disposed of his stock in that market, and on Monday started back, intending to go to Leavenworth. Yesterday morning he arrived in this city, with f 1,009 in a wallet in a pocket inside of his vest, on the Missouri Pacific Rail way. When the train was about pulling out from the State Line station, Mr. GofF was approached by an unknown party, who asked him if he was going to Leavenworth. Mr. Gofl answered in the affirmative, when the man told him he had better go forward in the next car, as the one he was iu would be switched off. Supposing the mau to be an attache of the road, Mr. Goff proceeded to move into the next car. When he reached the car platform he was surround ed by four men, who began to crowd and jostle him. Quickly divining their object Mr. Gofl' attempted to shove them off, but he was closely pressed, and during the little scuttle his wallet was picked from his pocket and Mr. Gofl then shoved from the car platform. The train was by this time in motion, but Mr. Golf was uot disposed to give up so easily, and determined to regain the car. As he attempted to step on the plat form, three or four fists were thrust threat eningly iu his face, and ho could not court further danger by jumping on a moving train, when men, probably armed, stood ready to dash him off. Before assistance could be obtained, the train was under full speed, and was quickly out of recall. The telegraph was called into hasty re quisition and the train stopped at Wyan dotte, but the robbers bad jumped off be fore probably almost instantly after Mr. GoiTs rude ejection. A Church Accident. Shamokin, Pa., May 22. During the ceremonies of laying the corner stone of the new Catholio church in this borough this afternoon a portion of the temporary flooring which had been erected for the ac commodation of tho vast multitude assem bled gave way and precipitated Into the basement beneath a large number of per sons. It is Impossible at this time to give the names and number of the injured, but it is supposed that six are seriously hurt. Bishop Wood, of Philadelphia, and Bishop O'Harra, of Scranton, who were conducting the ceremonies at the time of the accidont, assisted by about twenty clergymen, were among those who went down with the falling floor, but luckily es caped any serious injury. Some of the injured are pretty badly hurt. Anthony Kelley, of Mahanoy Plane, formerly freight conductor on the Reading railroad, is so badly hurt that his life is despaired of. One man had both legs broken. A little boy and girl also had their legs broken. Remarkable Tornado. The Terre Haute Express says: One of the strangest storm freaks ever know oc curred in Sugar Creek township Thursday evening about 0 o'clock, at the time of the bail storm in that city. A tornado com me need on John Harris's place, at Cherry Grove, prostrating the trees in the grove, and sweeping almost with the velocity of lightning to Macksville, a distance of a mile and a quarter, and ending finally In the river bottom, three hundred yards this side of Macksville. Tne" track of the hurricane was only about forty feet in width, but it swept everything clean before it. Every tree In its course was blown to the earth. In the river bottom giant elms were snapped off as If they had been brittle pipe stems. Two stables were demolished in Macks ville and the tornado struck the corners of two houses, shattering them aud carrying articles of bed clothing, etc., a great dis tance. In the bottom, water was thrown Into the air hundred feet, and altogether the scene was appalling, as could well be imagined. Fortunately no human being was in the track of the tornado.
