A Fanny Fight.
There was an American ship at Panama,
not long ago, and the sailor boys thought
they would astonish the natives in the way
of cock-fighting. Thoy had a bald eagle,
which they transformed, , by clipping of
wings and ruthlessly pulling out of tail,
into a rooster of the most ridiculous aspect
imaginable. This nondescript animal was
entered for a fight. : The game cocks have
a way, when first placed in the ring, of
crouching and pointing at each other.
Then they advance across the intervening
space, . and meeting in the centre, with
beads erect and fury in every movement,
they fly at one another, each endeavoring
to drive his long steel spur, into the head
or breast of his adversary. On this occa
sion the Panama bird, victor hi many a
well-fought 'battle, began , his usual .tac
tics, while his clumsy adversary, nestled
quietly where he had been placed; , and
paid no attention to him.., Anticipating
an easy victory, the joyous game-cock now
advanced without ceremony, and deliver
ed one or two smart blows, somewhat
damaging the aoquiline features of the
foe; whereat old Sleepy, without taking
the trouble to rise, quietly reached out a
claw, caught the frisky warrior and pulled
off his head I This was unscientific but
conclusive.

A certain college professor had assembled
his class at the commencement of the term,
and was reading over the list of names to
see that all wore present. It chanced that
one of the number was unknown to the
professor, having just entered the class.
" What is your name, sir ?" asked the
professor, looking through his spectacles.
"You are a brick," was the startling

"Sir," said the professor, half starting
out of his chair at the supposed imperti
nence, but not quite sure that he had un

ed the professor with stilled indignation.

sinking back into his seat in confusion ;

Swallowing a House.
John Ilayncs, while on a bender, recently
made a mistake very natural to one in his
condition.
He imagined that he was indulging in
copious libations of benzine, when, in
fact, he was drinking genuine linseed oil.
Shortly after John felt a queer taste
coming into hisjinouth. The first thought
that occurred to him was that he was poi
soned. A physician was sent for, and he
applied a stomach pump.
" Is there arsenic in it, doctor?" faintly
inquired the patient.
"No," replied the Esculapius, "it smells
like a newly-painted house."
" What ?" screamed John.
' " It smells like a newly-painted house,"
rcpoated the physician.
" Doctor," said the now exoited patient,
"you don't mean to toll me that I've swal
lowed a house ?"
tW An Auburn, Me., fisherman a few
days since, while fishing through a hole in
the ice, caught a trout so largo it could not
be brought through the" orifice. The fisher
man, however, gently played his fish with
one hand while he chopped the ioe with
the other, until the opening had been en
larged sufficiently, then with a skillful jerk
be brought out a doad cat with a brick on
its neck, the entire ' prize t weighing over
nine pounds. The profanity which ensued
caused a heavy thaw for sixty rods in all
directions.'

entering a Pittsburg drug store, the other
