Good Steers.
" I liked your aortnon very much to-day
with a single exception," said a worthy
pastor to a minister who had occupiod hit
pulpit a portion of the Sabbath.
" Well, what was the exception ?"
" I think yon used too many technical
phrases." '
"Did I? I didn't think of it."
" You repoatedly spoke of drawing in
ferences. Now, that was Greok to many
hearers."
"O, no! Most every ono, of course,
knows what we mean by drawing infer
ences.", You are mistaken, brother, as sure as
you live; I do not believe one-half of my
congregation would understand the phrase."
" You certainly cannot be right."
"I am. Now, there is Mr. Smith,"
pointing out a man just turning the corner,
who is quite an intelligent farmer ; we
will overtake him, and I will ask him if
he can draw an inference, and I do not
bolieve that he will understand me."
Accordingly the ministers quickoned
their pace, and as they came up to Mr.
Smith, his pastor said to him:
" Brother Smith can you draw an infer
ence ?"
Brother Smith, thus summarily intero-
gated, looked at his pastor for some fifteen
seconds quite surprised, and then rather
hesitatingly said:
" Well, I suppose I could. I've got a
pair of steeis that can draw anything to
which they are hitched, but I shouldn't
like to on Sunday."
A Boy's Essay ou Dogs.
The dog is bigger than the hen, and
docs not wear feathers. My dog wears a
collar. It is not a paper collar. I have
had him a year. lie is big enough to kite.
lie bites meat and boys. Sometimes he
bites Ja girl. Dogs have four legs except
when one of them gets cut off by the cars.
Then ho docs only have three legs and
a tail, and when his tail is cut off bo is a
bull-pup. My pa says older-men is like,
dogs cause they have hygerfogy. I guess
that is spelt rite. I don't know what it is,
Tige nover had it. Tige is my dog. My
aunt gave me a wire cage for my dog to
ware. He did not like it. A man with a
brass star on bis vest told me to take it oil'.
Ho had black eyes, he said it was cruel.
Told him it was a nozzel.
My aunt said so. He said a verse. This
was it: Let dogs delight to bark and bite,
for its there natur to. I asked him if that
was in the bible. Ho said it was a warts
book. I don't see what a warts book has
to do with dogs. Dogs don't have warts,
but boys do. I cured mine with a red-hot
darning-needle. This is all I know about
dogs.
t2TA celebrated singer, Madame Lo
Rochois, was giving a younger companion
in art some instructions in the tragic char
acterof Medea, " which she was about to
sustain. " Inspire yourself with tbe situa
tion," said she; "fancy yourself in the poor
woman's place. If you were deserted by
a lover whom you adored, what would you
do?" The reply was as unexpected as it
was ingenious: "I should look out for
another."
t5T The following Btory is told of Rev.
Mr. Hammond, who approached a man at
Burlington, the other day, asking himself
if he was a Christian. "No," replied the
other party, "I am a railroad man,
" Well," said Mr. Hammond, " I know of
several conductors in New England that
are Christians," " That may work down
East all right, but a man can't be both in
Iowa," responded the employee
tSfAn Irishman once lived with his
father as hired man. The young folks of
the neighborhood, on one occasion, had a
party to which they did not invite him.
Fat considered himself very much slighted,
but after cogitating over the matter for a
while, he brightened up, and exclaimed,
" Faith, I'll be aven with 'em yet; I'll have
a party mesilf, and I won't Invite nobody I",
EA stingy man who pretendod to be
very fond of bis horse, but kept him nearly
starved,satd to a friend, " You don't know
how rouoh we all think of that horse. I
Bhall have him stuffed, so as to preserve
him when he dies." " You bad better
stuff him now," retorted the friond, "so as
to preserve him living."
1ST" Susan," said a girl, looking out or
the upper story of a grocery store, ad
dressing another girl, who was trying to
eutor at the front door, " we've all been to
prayer meeting and been converted ; so
when you want lager on Sunday you will
have to come in at the back door."
tW" I say, Pompey," said one freoman
to another, "dis chile has tried lots of gifts
fairs and tings for prize, but nebber could
draw anything at all." "Well, Jim, I'd
vise you to try a hand-cart; de chances are
tousand to one dat you could draw dat,"
tW In Judicial Mo Arthur's court, in
Washington, tbe other day, a lawyer called
tbe judge's attention to the fact that a cer
tain ease had been upou the docket fur a
decade.
" But the cane has not decayed," replied
the Judgo.
