department.
A Museum of Horses' Hoofs.
The St. Louis globo says : Tho Farrier
department at the Arsenal, in charge of
John Kiei nan, the Chief Farrier of the U.
States Army, is a place of great importance
to all interested in horseflesh, and yet few
of the citizens know of tho groat impor
tance of the sights to be seen there. Tho
first thing that attracts tho attention is a
skeleton of a horse, with each piece num
bered, for reference to au index.
Placed on shelves around tho room are
about 400 specimens of horse anatomy,
mostly of legs below the knee, and of tho
hoof, and of the malformations produced
by improperly shoeing horses. Tho effects
of tight shoeing, of pressure against tho
coffin bone, of squeezing the frog, and of
channeling the hoof, are plainly shown.
Among the collection is a malformed hoof,
containing a three-seated coffin bono, or
three hoofs "telescoped" together, taken
from one of President Grant's horses.
Thero are fifty specimens of hoof contrac
tions by shoeing.
In another part of tho room the wall is
'Covered with several hundred horse-shoes,
.classified and arranged with regard to timo
and, country. Tho collection has in it sam
ples of shoes used in European armies. An
examination of thesd shoes leads ono to be
lieve that tho Americans aro ahead of all
others in improvements of tho article
This shoe and anatomical collection is
bolievcd to be the largest intho world, and
is the work of Mr. Kiernan's industiy and
research for the past five years. Tho col
lection is used as a school of instruction to
farriers of the army. No one is allowed to
shoe tho horses used in the regular army
unless ho understands the anatomy of the
horse's hoof, foot and legs. The Dunbar
theory and tho Kiornan practice, which
was introduced iu the army in 1808, is
taught.
The system is to mnlco tho bottom or
face of the hoof smooth and level, without
any channels to collect gravel in. Tho
shoe is placed upon the hoof so ns to sus
tain an equal pressure on every part, and
tho heels of the shoo run straight along tho
sides of tho hoof, and turn from tho frog so
as not to press it or bruise the colli n-bono.
Tho shnpo of tho shoo is that of a perfect
letter U. President Grant and many noted
horsemen employ Mr. Kiernan to superin
tend tho shoeing of their horses.
FIRE.
So many accidents aro daily occurring
from broken kerocene lamps, and clothes
taking fire from gas lights and open fire-
places, that the following, which wo clip
from an exchango, deserves attention.
Perhaps three persons out of four would
rush right up to the burning individual,
and begin to paw with their hands without
any aim. It is useless to tell the victim to
do this or that, or call for water. In fact
it is generally best uot to say a word, but
sieze a blanket from a bed, or a cloak, or
any woollen fabric if none is atl)and, take
any woollen material hold the corners as
far apart as you can, stretch them higher
than your head, and running boldly to tho
person, make a motion of clasping in the
arms, just about the shoulders. This in
stantly smothers the fire and saves the face
The next instant throw the unfortunato
person on the floor. This is an additional
safety to the face and breath, and any rem
nnnt of flame can be put out more leisurely
The next moment immerse tho burnt part
in sweet oil. Next got some common flour
and put it on the burn about an inch in
thickness, and if possible put the patient to
bed. Let the flour remain until it full off
itself, when a beautiful new skin will bo
found. Unless the burns aro deep, no other
application is needed. Dry flour for burns
is the most desirable romedy ever proposed,
' and the information ought to be imparted
to all. Dredge on the flour till no more
will stick and cover with cotton batting. '
Dry Food for Horses,
The Spirit of tht Timet says: "We
never have believed and never shall believe
that chopped hay and corn meal, saturated
with water, Is proper for a work
ing horse as a general diet. We firmly
believe that the food of a working horse
which cannot be pastured should be good
ground oats and sweet hay for at least five
days a week. Look at the South, where
the common run of horses are fed on corn
Why, the result is big head, a terrible
' and almost incurable complaint. We also
think that wet corn meal is the very worst
way of feeding corn to a horso that ever
was practiced. And tho chopped, wet bay
is not half so good as fine, bright timothy
from tho mow. We like to hear the horse
grinding up bis good timothy hay like
grist mill after he has finished his oats. .
nice mash once in a while is good, and
t very different thing from almost constant
oft diet.'
t3f"True comfort can only be obtained
when both body and mind are actively em.
j'loyed. ,
