Apples for Haman Blood.
With us the value of an apple, as an ar
ticle of food, is far underrated. Besides
containing a large amount of sugar, mucil
age and other nutritive matter, apples con
tain vegetable acid,aromatio qualities, etc,
which act powerfully in the capacity of re
frigerants, tonics and antiseptics ; and
when freely used at the season of mellow
ripeness, thoy prevent debility, and indi
gestion, and avert without doubt many of
the " ills that flesh is heir to." The opera
tors of Cornwall, England, consider ripe
apples nearly as nourishing as bread, and
far more so than potatoes. In the year
1801, apples, instead of being converted
into cider, were sold to the poor, and the
laborers assert that they could "stand
their work" on baked apples without moat,
whereas a potatoe diet either requires meat,
or some other substantial nutriment. The
French and Germans use apples exten
sively, and so do the inhabitants of all Eu
ropean nations. aTho laborers dopond upon
them as an article of food, and frequently
make a dinner of sliced apples and bread.
There Is no fruit cooked in as many differ
ent ways in our country as apples ; nor is'
there any fruit whose value, as an articlo
of nutriment, is so great, and so little ap
preciated. Water Cure Journal.
Adulteration of Spices.
A friend of ours, recently returned from
Europe, informs us that while at Malaga
ho was asked to buy almond shells. Not
knowing to what use they were put, ho
was informed and has since fouud it to be
true that parties from New York havo for
a year or two past imported several cargoes,
to be ground and mixed with spices, prin
cipally cassia, which when ground, it so
nearly resembles that it can not be detected
by the eye. That all sorts of ground spices
have been for a long time largely adulter
ated is a fact well known to most people.
Cassia is mixed with ground almond shells,
pepper with parched peas, ginger with corn
meal, mustard, ditto, cloves and other spic
es, with various cheap substances that can
not be detected with the eye. To such an
extent is this fraudulent business carried,
that we unhesitatingly say that one-half of
what is sold for ground spices is not what
it purports to be ; and this is not all of the
fraud practiced in these articles ; 1 they are
mostly put in packages of from one-fourth
to one pound papers for the retail trade.
If any one will take the trouble to weigh
these packages, he will And, as a rule, ho
is cheated in weight as well as in quality.
Save the Best Fowls for Breeding.
It is the worst possiblo policy to kill all
the best and handsomest fowls, and save
only the mean and scraggy ones to breed
from. This is precisely the way to run
out your stock ; for like tends to breed like,
and the result is, that by continually tak
ing away the best birds, and using the eggs
of tho poorest, your flock will grow poorer
and poorer every succeeding year.
It would seem as though this was too
plain to be insisted upon, but, in fact,
" line upon line" is indeed. It is the cry
ing want of the poultry ' upon the farms
the country through, this careful and in
telligent selection of the best for breeding.
Nothing is lost by a little self denial to
start with. The extra pouud or two of
poultry flesh that you leave on its legs, in
'stead of sending it to the market, is as
good seed, and will bring forth tenfold and
twenty-fold in your future broods. Save
your best stock for breeding. The Poul
try World.

Take eleven pounds of unslacked lime
and one gallon of boiling water and stir
into a thick pudding; then add to it two
gallons of linseed oil and one quarter of a
pound of potash dissolved in one pint of
boiling water. Mix thoroughly, and if the
oil and potash do not unite, add a little
more potash water ; there must be enough
to cut the oil perfectly, but no more. It
will be thicker than common paint, but
will spread easily with a common paint
brush, and will wear excolluutly well, and
has all the appearance of a superior paint,
while its cost is less than half as much.
For a paint for bams, out houses, fences,
etc, it is unequalcd.
Preserving i'euch Trees.
It is a general complaint that poach
trees, after producing a few crops, not only
cease bearing, but parish iu a short tirno ;
whereas tho natural life is fifty or sixty
years or more, Dr. Wood communicates
'.i... ti. e . ' i j. i ...i. i

thinks, furnishes a key to unlock this mys
tery, and affording peach growers a rem
edy for the early loss of their trees. He
believes this defective power of growth is
owing to a lack of potasli in tho soil, and
lie assures us, that if alkali is supplied to
the tree so that it shall recall the , small
roots arid be absorbed, tho fruit bearing
power U restored, and the fruit Itself revived.

On and after the tenth day of April,
1872, The Home Itcservo force of Insur
ance Agents belonging to " Tire Pennsylva
nia Central Insurance Company" will leave
Pottsville in heavy force, and occupy ten
different counties of the State, where they
will continue to act as the Company's
Agents until a full line of Locnl Agents
can be appointed, when they will be recalled.
As a body of men, I believe they are supe
rior Insurance Agents, and most of them
speak the English, French, WeUh and Ger
man Languages. The City Insurance
Journals, with all their sneers at Mutual
Companies, and continual cry of Fraud I
Fraud I 1 &c, cannot muNter any better In
surance material I Why don't the City In
surance papora toll the public that no Mu
tual Company broko' or failed during the
last ten years? .Why don't they tell the
public that more than half the btock Com-
I. unit s startud within the lust ten years
uive? It is a well-known fact that Mutual
Companies cantiot fail.
