The most successful breeders of horses, cattle, sheep or swine, know from experi ence that although they may possess the hest nnimals 1 for breeding, they will uot bo successful in producing supoi'lor stock if a continual growth of young an imals is not kept up. In oidcr to begin in time at this indispcnsablo preparation of success, the brood marcs, cows, ewes and sows are most carefully and suitably fed while with young, and as soon as the young nnimals make their appcaranco, thoy are taken the greatest care of, the dams being suitably fed whilo sucking, and when the young ones are weaned, they are not sup posed to want for food or drink a single hour. By this means a continuous or rapid growth is kept up, and the animals attain a largo Bize and heavy weight at an earlyjago. When breeding auimals are not proporly fed and comfortably sheltored in wjutcr, . the bad effect of such treatment is not con f lined to their want of condition it is shar . ed by their progeny and can never be remo - died. When young stock is not well fed aud comfortably sheltered in winter their . growth becomes stunted and no subsequent amount of treatment can repair the dam ago. Young animals may suffer for want of proper provender in summer and au tumn as in winter and when this happens it stops continuous growth and prevents ultimato success in tho. objects of the breed- ors. Coal-Ashes in Poultry Houses. ' D ry eaith is unquestionably the best thing in tho world for tho dusting-bin. It nay be procured wit'i very Jittlo trouble during a dry spell in summer. But if not attended to at tho proper season, or if the supply gives out, then coal-ashes are a very good substitute. One great merit which Hhey possess is, that as taken from the Vstore or furnace they are so very dry. Tho dust bin in the fowl house should be so ar ranged as to not gather dampness from tho ground for the' drier its contents can be kept the better. Coal-ashes should be furnished in a separate box, in case tho dust bin is tilled with dry earth, for tho ash es contain bits of burnt slate and other earthy matter greedily devoured by fowls in winter, and which servo to promote ap petite aud digestion, and contain materials for the formation of egg-shells. Wood ashes have been recommended for fowls to roll in, as it is said the potash they contain is noxious to vermin. No doubt but it is too caustic for the feet and skin of the fowls, and in wet weather forms a biting lye. liens will not wallow in wood-ashes when dry earth is accessible, and thoy ought to have something to say in the matter." Poultry World. Fulling at the Halter. A year ago I had a four-year old horse which contracted tho habit of pulling back whouever she was fastened. Slio would be sure to break loose if what held her could bo broken by her drawing in such a back ward way. She was cured of the habit by -taking a rope two feet long, fastening one end around her body just behind her shoul ders, and passing the other end through the ring of the halter and tying it to the post, She lay back for her usual pull for a few times when fixed in this way but soon found she was drawing from her body instead of her head, which she did not rel ish, and soon gave it up entirely. Bhe can now be left anywhere in perfect safety, as nothing will induce her to pull back when fastened. Cor. of Country Gentleman. Mixed Grain. Ad eastern farmer says : It has been our custom for several years to sow a mix ture of oats and wheat for feeding stock, two bushels of oats and one of wheat to tho acre. Tho yield in bushels is greater. The quality of tho product Is very superior ; tho wheat is very plump ; it makes a heavy, rich and nutritious feed for stock. Peas and oats are frequently sown together, to be used as feed for young stock. Nothing is better as a flesh-forming food. Oats and barley are also raised together. We should suppose the barley would riren and burst the shell before tho oats would mature. It is said the barley is retarded in ripening by tho shade of the oats, so that both reach maturity at the same time. Fancy Ureeo. Unscorchod coffee, put Into the white of an egg, will in twenty-four hours produce a very bcautilul groen for fancy painting proof of poison in unbrowned coffee. tW Strung sage tea, as a daily wash is represented f.0 stop hair from falling out, and What will prevent it from falling out, is an invigorator and consequently good. 13 A good drain on a farm Heavy mortgage at 10 per cent, will drain it about as rapidly as anything.
