Tuesday, January 14, 1873.
Thk Lkdoeii Almanac, makes Its ap
pearance again this year and contains its
usual amount of valuable information.
An edition of one hundred thousand is
printed so that each subscriber to that
valuable paper may have a copy.
New Yorkers, and in fact tho whole
country, have had a surprise in the con
viction of Stokes, for the murder of Col.
Fisk. When the jury brought in a verdict
of murder In tho first dogrce, the prisoner,
and the court, and even tho prosecuting
attorney, seemed perfectly astounded. Not
but what all considered it a just verdict
but justice has so long slumbered in that
city, that all supposed it was past awaking.
Tho court has sentenced Btokes to be hung
on the 26th of February, tho sentence
being pronounced just ono year from tho
day of the murder. His counsel has filed a
bill of exceptions, for the purposo of
obtaining another trial, and somojudgo
may yet be found who will cheat justice of
her dues.
Tho Legislature. ,
The Legislature met on Tuesday last.
The House was called to order at 11 A. M.
by Chief Clerk Selfridge.
Hon. Frauds Jordan, Secretary of the
Commonwealth, presented the returns of
the election of members.
On a motion, an election was held for
Hpeaker. The Republicans voted for Wil-
liam Elliott. The Democrats voted for
C". B. Brockway, of Columbia.
Mr. "Welsh, of Philadelphia, voted for
Joseph B. Hancock, Bcpublican, for
Speaker.
Mr. Elliott was declared elected by a
vote of sixty against thirty-eight for Mr.
Brockway, and ono for Mr. Hancock.
The Senate met at 3 o'clock. Called to
order by Chief Clerk Ilamersly. .
Secretary of the Commonwealth Jordan
presented tho election returns of tho new
Senators.
On motion of Mr. Davis, of Philadelphia,
the Senate proceeded to elect a Speaker,
whereupon Mr. Goorgo II. Anderson of
Allegheny, was chosen by eighteen Repub
lican votes against fourteen Dcmocratice
votes cast for Mr. J. Dupuy Davis.of Berks.
The minor officers were then elected and
both houses proceeded to business.
A number of bills have already been in
troduced in both houses.
The House of Representatives passed a
bill increasing the salary of tho Governor
to $9000 per annum.
Danger from Ice.
During the terrible cold weather of the
l last of December, the ice in the Mississippi
river did great damage. On tho 20th ult.,
"the steamer Celosto, while trying to
land at the foot of Island No. 23, was
struck by a mass of floating ice, and split
into fragments and sunk, with a cargo of
corn and cotton worth $50,000 to $00,000,
the officers and passengers having barely
time to escape in life-boats. The steamer
was worth $20,000, and was not insured.
Her crew and passengers walked sixty
miles across the country to Brownsville,
suffering intensely from cold and exhaus
tion. Two huudred thousand bushels of
corn were sunk at Memphis, by the barges
in which it was contained being cut down
by the floating ice. Four steamers lying
at the levee at that city were also lost.
On the 31st ult.,' the ice In the Ohio
river broke up and did great damage to
the boats at Cincinnati. Several steamers
were wrecked and over fifty barges were
sunk.
tW Early Thursday morning John G.
Ileen, of Lancaster, brakeman on the ninth
fast freight east, Pennsylvania railroad,
was Instantly killed one mile east of K in
ner' station. ,Tho brakeman had been sent
back to flag an approaching train, and as
the latter was detained a considerable
length of time it is supposed that be sat on
the track and fell asleep or became so be
numbed by the cold as to be unable to
move from his position. While in this
posture the train following his train ran
over him and mangled his body in the
most frightful manner.
t3TThe family of A. Culp, consisting
of seven persons, of Decatur, 111., became
violently sick immediately after breakfast
Friday morning, the symptons being those
of poison. A physician investigated the
matter.and found a paper containing arse
nio deposited in the pump from which the
water bad been used to prepare ooflee for
tho family breakfast The victims ore
very ill, but at the last accounts were out
of danger. , There is no clue as to who put
rsenlc in the pump. .
Miscellaneous News Items.
t3P One of the Hartford companios re
cently received an application for life In
surance from a woman 84 years of age, who
is the mother of 19 children.
t3FIn Baltimore all the Catholic
churches are making a concerted effort in
the temperance cause, which promises
great good. Their meetings are largely
attended.
t3T" In Clearfield county, on Friday a
week, a vote was taken, as provided for in
the Local Option bill, on the question of
license or no license. The prohibitionists
earned the day from 800 to 1000 majority.
C3?" As Mrs. John Eelsea, of Lisbon, N.
II., was attending to domestio duties, the
other morning, she suddenly exclaimed,
" All is dark I cannot see," and, falling
unconscious into her husband's arms, died
in a few moments.
A Kentucky man set oi(t to husk eighty
bushels of corn the other day, "but right
in the busiest part of the task he was called
off to shoot a man who had proposed
elopement with bis wife. IIo therefore fell
short two bushels.
t2FAt Springfield, Ohio, on Tuesday
night, Nancy Northington was murdered
by her husband, and her son terribly mu
tilated, his skull being crushed with an
axe. It is supposed the husband was in
toxicated. tW A very strange and fatal disease is
spreading among the cattle in Franklin
township, Ohio, the symptoms of which are
spasms and g encrul weakness. No cattle
thus attacked have yot recovered, gener
ally dying in a very few hours from the
first attack.
Washington, Jan. 0. Yesterday after
noon, whilo Edward Farrow, an old soldier,
at tho Soldiers' Home was herding cattlo,
ho was attacked by a bull and gored in the
neck. The larynx being completely sev
ered. Farrow lived a few hours only.
tW Last week Wm. E. Dccgan, while
going through tho woods in the neighbor
hood of Thorndalo, Sullivan county, came
upon a drove of five floor. lie had a'mark
hammer in his hand which he threw and
knocked one of tho deer down, and then
ran up and caught it alive.
t3TA clear case of conscience comes from
Providence, where a woman, who lost her
purse some months ago, recently found it
hanging to the door bell with $5, and a
note from the thief asking that " I may be
forgiven, as it is my .first real siu, and I
will promise to mako amends in the
future."
At a fight among quarrymcu in a
drinking house in Centrovillo, a hamlet
near Saugortics, New York, on New Year's
night, a Miss Hillycr had the top of her
head beaten off; a Mrs. Stewart bad several
ribs broken and was fatally injured ; an
other woman was also brutally beaten, and
some twenty men, the combatants, were
also more or loss wounded.
CgTJames L. Watson, a native of, So
vaunah, Goorgin, and Benjamin Crowder,
an Englishman, have boon tried at Do
bruckin, Hungary, and tho former sen
tenced to six mouths imprisonment, lor
remarks not considered complimentary to
the Emperor of Austria, and the latter to
three months imprisonment for resisting
arrest on the same occasion.
Chilicothe, Jan. 0. There is a rumor
prevailing hero that an explosion occurred
in the burning mountain near Baiubridge,
in this county, on Tuesday evening. This
mountain has contained Internal fires since
October last, and so far no person has ad
vanced any plausible theory to account for
their existence.
Cairo, January , 10. This morning a
mall boat containing two dead men drifted
past Columbus, Ky. One of the bodies
was in a sitting position, with the head
drooping. The other was lying in the bot
tom of the boat, which was surrounded by
a field of ice, rendering it impossible to
reach the boat from the shore. It is sup
posed that in attempting to cross the river
the boat was caught in the ice and the men
were frozen to death. '
t2TThe Baldwin Locomotive Works
have closed a contract for supplying a Rus
sian house with nine engines, to be used in
Finland, on the Hungo road. The locomo
tives are to be of five feet gauge, of the
ordinary American pattern, with 15x25
inch cylinders, 63 inch driving wheels, and
will burn wood. This is a high compli
ment paid to Americau skill and enterprise.
Indeed, such compliments are becoming
quite common, and tho day is not far dis
tant, under proper encouragement, v. lieu
the products of our manufacturers will be
in all the principal markets of the world.
f3T At 11:40 o'clock on Saturday night
the citizens in some parts of Columbus,
Ohio, t were aroused by a low, rumbling
noise as of distant thunder, accompanied
by three detonations that shook the houses,
rattled the furniture, and caused a geueral
alarm. Many persons left their beds in
search of supposed burglars, and others to
the street to learn the particulars of what
they supposed was some boiler explosion.
Up to lost evening diligent inquiry in all
parts o the city failed to discover any
reason for the shock, and many believe it
was caused by an earthquake.
tW A cake walk recently took plaoe at
the A. M. E. church at Coatesville, for the
benefit of the church. As many of our
readers are not familiar with the modut
operandi of a cake walk, we append a de
scription thereof: A cake containing a gold
ring 1b placed on a small table, when the
ladies and gentlemen, who have previously
contributed twenty conts, form a ring and
march around the cake, a small flag hav
ing previously been place'd in the hands of
some one. Tho judge then stands near
with watch in hand. When the ring moves
round, the flag is continually passed from
one to the other, and the one who holds it
when the designated time is up gets the
cake.
C$7 A horrible accident occurred at
Sholbyville, on thVr Shortline railway, on
the 7th inst.. James fi.' .Slaughtor, an
insurance agent and a prominent citizen of
Loriisville, who had boon visiting his rel
atives at that place, in attempting to got
on the cars, was thrown beneath the wheels
and his head was entirely sevored from his
body.
A Bloody Affray.
The result of an old family feud, took
place at Beaver Creek, in Floyd county Ky.,
on New Year's -day. William Sizomore
was killed, William 'Turner was mortally
wounded, and John B. Turner was danger
ously wounded. All the parties are re
spectable citizens.
Foreign Items.
A brig went ashore on the Isle of Wight
on the 0th inst., and soon went to pieces.
Nino persons we're lost. Name of vessel
not ascertained.
Paris, January 7. Tho Cai lists in Spain
have torn up rails on the road between
Miranda and Bilboa, and betwoen Alasua
and Fampclona. They also set fire to a
railway station, completely destroying it,
and made prisoners of railway officials.
The employes of the North of Spain Rail
road have struck work, and trains have
temporarily censed running in consequence.
Constantinople, Jantiaiy 0. An alarm
ing con spiracy has been discovered by tho
government, tho conspirators being emi
grants from B nearest, of whom there are
large numbers now in this city. The ex
act details have not been developed, but
it is knowu that the authorities are in pos
session of evidence showing the life of the
Sultan and high government officials to bo
in danger from the conspirators.
London, January 0. The ex-Emperor
Napoleon Third of France, expired at
about a quarter of eleven o'clock this morn
ing, at Chiselhurst, from the effects of the
soveral operations for stone in tho bladder
that he has undergone in tho last week.
The event creates tho utmost excitement
throughout England as well as in France
and all the countries of Europe
The upper floors of the granary of tho
Lion brewery, at Lambeth, fell on the 0th
inst., and tho manager, clerks and oilier
employes are buried in the ruins. The
Fire Brigade is at work trying to rescue
tho victims, but there is littlo hope that
any will be saved.
