Marry in baste and repeat at pleasure. tW" I paws for a reply," at tbe hungry dog said when 1 scratching at the door for a bone. EST "The thing's up with hiin," as the country boy said of the man in the bal loon. tW The recent marriage of a Mr. Day with a Miss Field presents this singular anomaly, that although he pained the Held sho won the day. t3$ A gentleman, coming into the room of Dr. Barton told him that Mr. Vowel was dead. "What," said he, "Vowel dead Let us be thankful it was neither u nor i. IISTA physician,in handing his bill to the executor of the estate of a deceased patient, asked. " Do you winh to have a bill sworn to?" "No, no," replied the executor, the death of the decedent is sufficient ev idence that you attended him profesionally.' la?" The following announcement ap peared recently in an English paper : " St. James' Church On Sunday next after noon Bervice will commence at half-past three, and continue until further notice." Long service, that. It rntlier hit the nail on the head when a lady, on being asked what she thought was the meaning of the words, "the pestilence that wnlketh in darkness," answered that, in her opinion, it was bed bugs." Z3T A Frenchman, who was exhibiting some relics and other curiosities, produced among other things, a sword, which he as sured his visitors was the "Bword Balaam had." A spectator remarked that Balaam had no sword, but only wished for one. " Ver well, dis is de one ho wished for." 3F " Was Sir. Brown a very popular man when he lived in your town?" inquir ed a busy-body of his friend. "I should think he was,", replied the gentleman, " as many persons enacavored to prevent his leaving ; and several of them, including the sheriff's deputy, followed him for some distance." ESP" A Kilkenny sentry challenged an intruder on the encampment during the recent English manoeuvres. " Who are you?" said Pat. " I'm the officer of the day," was the re ply. Then by all the powers what are you doing here at night at all, at all?" imme diately asked Tat. tW A ton-year-old, boasting to a school mate of his father's accomplishments, put it thus : Jly father can do almost any thing. lie's a notary public, and he's a 'pothecary, and can pull teeth, and he's a horse doctor, and ho can mend wagons and things, and he can play the fiddle, and he's a jackass at all trades." t5T" A rough North Carolinian, going West with his dozen children and two dozen dogs recently, got on board a steam er at Kentucky landing, and his first ques tion was, " How much will you charge, Cap'n, to take us to Bt. Louis?" "Will you go on deck or in the cabin?" " Wal, Cap'n, I've lived in a cabin all my life, and I 'spose tho-cabin'll be good enough for me now." t3T"The Bishop of Wurtzburg once asked a sprightly little shepherd boy: " What are you doing here, my lad ?" "Tending swine." " How much do you get ?" ' "I also am a shepherd," continued tho bishop, "but I have a much better salary." "That may all be, but then I suppose you have more swine under your care," innocently replied tho boy. tW A few days ago the inhabitants of a country town in England were filled with conjecture at the following sign, painted in large capitals on the front of a house re cently fitted up and repaired : " Mrs. Brown, dealer in all sorts of laidies." All was codslornation. Inquiry was instantly set on foot as to who this Mrs.Brown might be, but no one could tell. She was a stranger iu the town. The second week after the inystory was unraveled. The house painter returned to finish his work, and concluded by adding, " and gentle men's wearing apparel." tW At the last school exhibition of a town in Maine the following essay 'received tho prize : On the turklo. This animal is found most always in the water and then he comes on dry land. The turkle cannot fly. If he was the right kind of a bird he could fly. The turkle has four paws and a mouth like the American eagle, which makes the British lion and the uniform tremble. The turklo has a shell, and sometimes folks put fire on it, and the turkle crawls out. When the turkle crawls out of his shell he is very wet and sticky. There are two kinds of turkles, the mudturkles and the other kind. Wo didn't have any other kind in our pond. French and Irish people eat turkle and frogs, but I shouldn't like to, I caught a turkle once, but it did not do me any good, for I swopped it off for a jack-knife. 1 don't kuow much about turkles. But I am for Grant, because my pap expects to get an office. John Jrwbuebrt.
