How to Draw a Largo Kail or Spike.
It frequently occurs that ono desires to
draw an iron gate bingo out of a tree or
from a hard wood post. Perhaps the tree
has enlarged to such au extent siuce the
hinge was first driven in, that the large end
is nearly grown over. In order to draw it
out readily, bore a hole in the tree or post
on the undor side, as close to the iron as
the auger can be made to work, than, with
a steel punch, crowd tho bingo or spike
into the hole. The auger or bit should al
ways cut a hole a triilo larger than the nail
or spike and as deep as tho length of the
iron to be removed. A largo or small nail
may be taken from a plank in this mannor
whon it is driven clear in, after which tho
hole can be plugged up with a pin without
damaging tho plank or a stick of timbor.
A largo nail driven clear into a tree, so that
tho head cannot be grasped with any instru
ment, may be taken out in two min
utes, by simply boring a hole closo to it on
tho under sido.
A Kr mcdy for Wounds.
A correspondent of tho Country Gentle
man gives the following remedy for painful
wounds :
Take a pan or shovel, with burning coals,
and sprinkle upon them common brown su
gar and hold the wounded part in tho
smoke. In a few minutes the pain will be
allayed and recovery proceed rapidly. In
my own case, a rusty nail had made a bad
wound in the bottom of my foot. The pain
and nervous irritation was severe. This was
all removed by holding it in tho smoko
fifteen minutes, and I was able to resume
my readiug in comfort. We have often
recommended it to others, with like results.
Last week ono of my men had his finger
nail torn out by a pair of ice-tongs. It be
came very painful, as was to have been ex
pected. Held in sugar smoko for twenty
minutes, the pain ceased, and it promises
speedy recovery.
Variety of Food.
In an experiment detailed in DeiWt Farm
Journal, where hogs were fed on cooked
potatoes and oats, the excrement showed
by the anodine test (which is very delicate)
that a large portion of starch was passing
off undigested. The addition of a small
amount of peas to the food caused all the
starch to bo appropriated to the animal
economy. Experience has demonstrated
that a variety of food is essential to tho
perfect development of animals. When
hogs are fed for any length of time on the
same food, they become "glutted," and
the addition of even a single article of food
to their accustomed diet causes a marked
improvement. If they are fed on corn,
they should have pumpkins or potatoes,
and access to grass should be allowed thera
when they do not' have a variety of food.
'The Now -England lfotnettead gives
this information on the subject of keeping
onions : "Onions will withstand for more
cold than is usually , supposed. If packed
dry in tight barrels, and all interstices filled
with chaff, they may be kept in a barn, or
where they will freeze quito .hard, and not
be injured, provided the barrels are closed
tight and not opened until the onions are
again thawed. Onions .stored in a warm
cellar are very likely to sprout in wiuter,
and then decay, emitting anything but an
agreeable odor." By adopting a mode
similar to this we do not remember losing
this most excellent vegetable by decay or
sprouting. The disease by which they have
disapcared if disease it can be called
has always been by consumption.
Charcoal for Turkeys.
A California paper highly recommends
charcoal for fattening turkeys, and recom
mends that it should be pulverized and
mixed with mashed potatoes and corn meal,
as well as fed to them in small lumps. It
mentions that in two lots of turkeys of four
each, treated alike, and one lot givon this
mixture, and the other not, there was an
averngo gain in the weight of the first of one
pound and a half each. ' .While we condomn
the practice of mixing the pulverized char
coal with the other food of turkeys, com
polling them to eat it whether they want to
or not, we have no doubt of the excellent
effects of supplying turkeys with charcoal
broken into smull bits, especially whon fat
tening for market. We have had evidence
of what we say, and for a number of years
have recommended charcoal for this pur
pose.' 1 f
To Keep Heat.
Meat Is much better for family use whou
at leaBt one week'old in cold weather. . The
English method for keeping meat for some
time has great merit. Experts say, hang
up a qnarter of moat with the out end up,
being the revorse of the usual way by the
leg, and the juice will lemain In the meat,
and not run to the cut and dry up by evap
oration. It U worth a trial, and when
made will be continued. :
