Hints to Housekeepers.
The woman best fitted to make the fire
side happy, is she whoso mind is well stored
with practical and useful knowledge, is
accomplished without affectation, retiring
and modest without prudery, frank, free
and gay, without frivolity, and thinks her
husband the greatest man the world ever
saw or is every likely to see. Faith in the
latter involves a thousand endearing quali
ties in a wife, which we have not time to
enumerate. In a country like this, where
there is no established order of aristocracy,
where fortunes change hands so frequently,
there are but few families, the female head
of which is not required to attend to the
economy of the household; to be a good
housekeeper is therefore, to be reckoned a
principal accomplishment in the girl for a
wife. If fortune happily secures her from
the necessity 6t partaking of the duties of
a housewife, the knowledge of direction
will be invaluable, for servants aro almost
uniformly careless. Indeed, when we con
sider the selfishness of human nature, it is
perhaps unreasonable to expect hirelings to
guard the interests of their employers as
faithfully as they would their own. A
great deal of waste occurs in the kitchen,
therefore for instance, in the boiling of
meats. The cook will throw out the water
without letting it cool to take off the fat,
or scrape the dripping pan into the swill
pail. Now the grease is useful in many
-ways It can be burned in lamps, mixed
with lard, or, when no pork has been boil
ed with it, mado into candles. Bits of
meat are thrown out which would make
liash. Bones are burned that would make !
soap. The flour is sifted in a wasteful
manner, or the bread pan left with dough
sticking to it. Pie orust is laid by to sour
instead of making a few tarts for tea. Cold
puddings are considered good for nothing,
when oftentimes they might be steamed for
the next day. Vegetables are thrown
away that would warm for breakfast nicely.
Apples decay for want of looking over.
Dish cloth 8 aro thrown where mice can de
stroy them. Soap is left in water to dis
solve. If Bath brick, whiting, rotten stone
etc, are used, much is wasted uselessly.
Bo much for practical Illustration. All the
instances of carelessness we have enumera
ted aro trifling in themselves, but, together
with many more which could be mentioned,
make a formidable whole. Thus the mis
tress of a house will often allow her hus
band's money to bo wasted, thinking, the
while, that because she drosses more plain
ly than some of her neighbors, she is a most
superior economist.
A Toad Undressing.
Audubon relates that he once saw a toad
undressing himself. He commenced by
pressing his elbows bard against bis sides,
and rubbing downwards. After a few
smart rubs his hido began to burst open
along bis back. He kept rubbing until he
worked all his skin into folds on his sides
find hips; and then grasping one hind log
with his hands, he hauled off one leg of his
pants the same as anybody would ; then
stripped off the other hind leg in the samo
way. He then took his cast off skin for
ward between his fore legs into his mouth
and swallowed it; then, by raising and low
ering his head he stripped off bis skin un
derneath, until it came to his fore-leg, then
grasping one of those with the opposite
hand, by a single motion of the head, and
while swallowing, he drew It from the nock
and swallowed the whole.
Old Platr.
A correspondent of the Maine Farmer
speaka of a man who had some old plustor
which be had removed from the walls of
his bouse, and pounded it as fine as lie
could, then sifted it and sowed it on bis
rye field. The result was a very large crop
of grain, and the next year a heavy growth
of grass. His argument was that the plas
tering on the walls of dwelling absdrbed
the gases and steam which were given fl'
from the kitchen,' stooping rooms, cot., and
that it thus acquired fertilizing properties
of great value, in addition to whatever ben
efit might accrue from the lime, hair, etc,
of which it was . composed, lie also allu
ded to tha statement that in China people
would put on new plastering for the old
which tbey took off so highly was old plas
tering prized there for agricultural pur
poses. , ' '
The Curry Comb.
As a rule, the curry comb is used too
much and the brush too little. When a
Lorae is brought into the stable covered
with sweat and mud, he should be rubbed
dry with straw ; the next morning, with a
curry comb in one band and a good brush
lu the other, be can be thoroughly cleaned
-the curry oomb being only used to
straigten the hairs ahead of the brush, i
Much care should be used in cleaning a
horse's legs with a curry comb, so at not to
injure the joints. ;

On and after the tenth day of April,
1873, The Home Reserve force of Insur

Pottsville in heavy force, and occupy ten
different counties of tho State, where they
will oontintte to act as the Company's

can be appointed, when they will bo recalled.
As a body of men, I believe they are supe
rior Insurance Agents, and molt of them
speak the English, French, Welsh and Gor
man Languages. The City Insurance
Journals, with all their snoers at Mutual
Companies, and continual cry of Fraud 1
Fraud I I &c, cannot muster any better In
surance materiuft Why don't the City In
surance papers tell tho publio that no Mu
tual Company broke or failed during the
last ten years? Why don't they tell the
public that more than half the Stock Com
panies startad within the last ten years
have? It is a wull-knowu fact that Mutual
Companies cannot fail.
