Scene In an EnnllHh Court.
On the 15th of July last, a most barba
rous and revolting exhibition of judicial
cruelty took place at the Assize Court at
Chelmsford, England.
" A young and, as the newspapers ex
press it, "interesting-looking" married
woman was arraigned for the wilful murdor
of her husband's first wife by poison. The
deceased had died on October 10, 1871,
and the prisoner who was married only in
December, was far advanced in pregnancy.
The woman was in the dock, with a couple
of brief intervals, for the space of seven
hours, and bravely she bore the trying or-'
deal, conducting herself with as much ease
and solf-possession as any lady whilst dis
pensing the hospitalities of her own drawing-room.
It was evident, however, to
skilled eyes, that the poor creature suffered
from eitter true or spurions labor-pains.
A couch was brought and the examination
of the expert was resumed. For the next
hour or two the scene was gbaBtly iu the ex
treme. Labor pains recurred at one time
every three or five minutes, the prisoner
alternately reclining, sitting and standing;
the evidence meantime proceeding as if
nothing had happened. At one time two
medical men were with her in the dock at
the same time; and it was evident that their
cheery counsel revived tho poor creature.
At 5:30 P. M., the evidence for the prose
cution boing finished, and no evidence be
ing forthcoming for the defence, tho quest
ion arose what was to bo done. Baron
Martin offered to go on with the case until
midnight, if necessary, but it was repre
sented by counsel that the medical men
were of opinion that the poor creature
might bo the better fol' a night's rest; so
the trial was adjoumed until the next mor
ning, and the excited spectators, among
whom were a large number of unmaiyicd
females, dispersed. In the course of the
evening the prisoner was delivered of a
child; next morning the jury was discharg
ed, and the trial postponed for three
mouths. From LippineotC$ Medical Timet.
Horrible Accident.
A Pittsburg paper of last Saturday says:
"About half-past ten o'clock yesterday
morning a shocking runaway accident oc
curred on the PerryBville road at a point
about six miles beyond Allegheny, by
which a farmer named John 8. Mullen, a
resident of Adams township, Butler county
was killed, and his body horribly mutilat
ed. Mr. Mullen had purchased a load of
lumber at the yard of James M'Brier, in
Allegheny, and was in the act of hauling it
home when the accident occurred.
lie had reached Heating's hotel, and
while driving down the hill the boards
slipped forward, which frightened the
horses, and they started on a gallop down
the hill. The farmor fell on the double
tree, and was fastened by some moans to
the wagon, when his body was dragged
along about half a mile. By parties who
were travelling along the road at the time
it was ascertained that first his head was
severed from his body and run over by the
wheels, the brains being scattered a con
siderable distance. Ilia arms were also torn
off, and his body then fell under the
horses legs, and was trampled upon and
mangled in a sickening manner. Pieces of
his body were scattered half a mile along
the road. The horses continued their
courso for two miles, when they were in
tercepted by Officer Miller, of Mayor Cal
low's police. He was horrified at the ghast
ly spectacle that presented itself, and after
recovering from the shock, began, with a
number of othors, to gather up tho remains.
The coroner was notified, and held an In
quest, when the above facts were elicited.
A verdict of accidental death was rondered.
The deceased was about forty-five years of
age, unmarried, and resided with his niece.
He was a native of Ireland, and was in
good circumstances. Pitttburg Commercial.
A Japanese Colony.
Among the guests at the Broadway tne
past two days, was Mr. S. Takato Agee,
from Japan, a gentleman of great enter
prise, intelligence, and immense fortune,
who has visited the city for the purpose of
inquiring into the feasibility and probable
results of establishing a small colony of
Japanese near this city. Mr. Agee's pur
pose is to bring over about 500 of his coun
trymen, establish a town within a mile or
two of this city, and then take contracts
for work upon the streets or railways. It
was the original intention of this gentle,
man to purchase a body of land on which
to locate his town, and have the women
and children engage in farming pursuits
while the men worked on contracts but be
found that this projoct would have to be
abandoned on account of the high price of
real estate. He now proposes to lease suf
ficient land for the town, and prefers it in
Clay county, near tho river bank. If a
suitable location can be found near enough
to the city, he will also lease enough to
farm iu a small way; to raise sufficient for
their own consumption at least. He will
hire his uieu for a term of four years, and
guarantee them transportation back to Ja
pan t the expiration of that time.
Agee has wealthy relatives in Ban Fran
cisco, and left for Chicago this morning to
attend to some business for them In relation
to shipment of teas to merchant in that
city. He will then return to this city, to
see if he can make the necessary arrange
ments for locating bis colony. Kama
