NEW BLOOMFIELD, PENN'A.
Tuesday, September 24, 1872.
' The Geneva arbitrators have closed their
labors. They have considered all the
claims and have agreed to award the Uni
ted States ' fifteen millions Ave hundred
thousand dollars in gold. The decision
seems to meet the approval of the people of
Great Britian. ...
A Labor Defalcation has been dis
covered in the accounts of one of the clerks
at the Sub-Treasury at New York. The
defaulter was in charge of the stamp de
partment. A short time since he appliod
for two weeks leave of abseuoe, and not
returning at the designated time, his ac
counts were examined and found to . be
short over one hundred thousand dollars.
The follow is probably out electioneering
as he has not yet returned.
Ex-Governor Curtin.
Last week the Libeial Republican State
Com ml toe announced the nomination of
Hon. A. G. Curtln for delegate at large to
the Constitutional Convention, which
nomination it is understood Mr. Curtin has
accopted. Col. McClure in a speech at Co
lumbia the other night announced au
thoritatively that Curtin is for Buckalew

Rescued from the Mormons. ...
The Carson, Nev., Register tells the fol
lowing story: Andrew Smith a Dane about
22 years of age, a resident of Carson Valley,
hearing that his sister was held in "durance
vile" at Sanpete, Utah Territory,by a Mor
mon to whom she was "sealed," a man
having two other wives, loft Mottsville
some three months since with the inten
tion of rescuing bis sister fiora the clutches
of the "Lord's Annointed." Arriving in
Utah he stopped at Sanpete some time,
making believe his presence there was
merely for the sake of paying his sister a
visit, in order to allay any suspioion that
might be raised in regard to his real inten
tions. . At the time the Mormon conference was
being held in Bait Lake City he prevailed
on the man by whom bis sister was held to
let his three wives accompany him (Smith)
to Salt Lake eity to attend the conference.
The poly gam 1st consented, and the parties
repaired to the 'City of Saints' in a carriage.
On reaching that place young Smith suo
ceedod in getting the two wives of the man
to stop at the hotel, while he and his sister
took a ride around the country, proposing
to return in a short time.
Leaving the unsuspecting fomales, and
when beyond the city limits, Smith drove
at a rapid rate until he reached Ogden,
where he and his sister took the cars going
west, leaving horse and buggy at Ogden
for the owners to recover as best they
could. The happy couple arrived here on
Thursday and proceeded to Carson Yalley,
where their parents reside. The young
lady was glad to escape from the thraldom
in which she was held, and her brother's
joy at effecting her freedom knew no
bounds. Smith says if this should meet
the eye of hl sister's former mate he hopes
he will come out here to reclaim her, or
send Brigham Young. Miss Smith when
married to the man, had just come to the
country and eould not speak a word of
English, and being ignorant of the cus
toms of the people was held an easy cap
tive. t5Mr. Samuel Cornbower, residing at
Jefferson station, North Codorus township,
York county, is saidto have in his posses

fourth year of her age, which regularly
works with his team, doing her regular
share of work, taking the lead in plowing
and working under the saddle in the, wagon.
Her last colt was two years old last spring,
and is a well formed animal. Mr. Corn
bower has owned the mare since she . was
seven years old, and is she supposed to be
the oldest of the - equlno species in York
county.

A Romantic Cam.
Lucas county, Ohio, has a genuine Enoch
Arden case similar in almost every par
ticular. The " Annie Arden" of the story
has just died, and the Toledo Blade gives
the romance of her life. Soon after she
was married her husband started to Phila
delphia to go into business there, bnt fail
ing, he despatched a letter to his wife tell
ing her of his plans, and then depaited to
the West Indies. The letter she never re
ceived. Nine years passed by and she,
having became convinced of her husband's
death, marriod again.
After her second marriage her first hus
band returned, and hearing how faithfully
she had mourned him, and that she was
bappy, he disappeared 'without making
himself known, and the ,' vague rumors of
his return was soon forgotten. Three years
later she was summoned to his death bed.,
where every thing was explained, and
where he told her how he had stolen
one look "through the casement" at her
as she sat in her now home, and then loft
her. The property which he accumulated
during his wandering ' life ho bequeathed
to her children. ' 11
A Curlons Cow.
Mr. F. P. Haehnlen, residing on the
Jonestown road, in the Ninth ward, has a
cow of Mr. Wm. Colder' s choice Alderney
breed, which was presented , by the latter
gentleman to Mr. II., when a mere calf.
The cow is now three years old and gives a
constant supply of milk, but never had a
calf, Mr. II. assures us. Mr. Haehnlen
prizes the animal highly for its many good
qualities, and would like some stock breed
er or scientific agriculturalist to explain the
theory of cows giving a flow of milk with
out having calves. Harritburg State Jour
nal. Double Mnrdcr.
The dead bodies of two white men were
found on the old Washington turnpike, in
a thicket, three miles from Baltimore, last
week. A pistol was also found by the side
of each, one discharged and the other not.
Tbey had been killed some weeks ago, as
they were much decayed. An emigrant
ticket was found on one. They were both
well clad. There is much mystery about
the affair. It is , supposed tbey were mur
dered by a party of gipsies encamped there
three weeks ago, and robbed.
