0. Tuesday, September 10, 1872. Mf AND HOUSEHOLD . ITEM We iniHte communication from all personnohoare interested in matter! properly belonging to this department. ,,. -, , , . The Best Time to Cut Bushes. ' Twenty years ago I bought a pasture of poor soil, badly overrun with bushes; roses, blackberry, bayberry and barberry. For several yoars thereafter, as opportunity oc curred during the summer season, the bush es were cut, and I had a good opportunity to observe the effect upon their lifo when cnt at different times. It was uniformly the case with all the kinds, that when they were cut In the latter part of August or early in September, they were most injur ed if not killed ' by the proceeding. The roses wore noarly all killed by one cutting at that scasoD, and the barberry, especially those of large growth and which were in fruit, never sent up a sprout from the stump or root. The baybfirry and blackberry wero more difficult to eradionte with the scytho, but wero then, and are ' now, kept down better when cut late in summor than at any other time. I am confident the time mentioned is the best to destroy any plant by cuttipg up ; and I think it would be more effectual if dono before the foliago drops in the autumn, Whilo the plant is growing, and too late for it to make a new growth before winter. ; " An experiment, however, which I mado for another purpose, leads me to think it may be dono later in the autumn. A few yoars ago I had about 200 peach trees from 3 to 5 inches in diameter, which bad boon left in the soedling rows to fruit, on, ac count of tlioir vigor and hardihood, and in tho hope that some of them would yield good fruit. They stood in rich ground, which was allowed to sward over with grass. None of them bore good fruit, and I desired to bud them with good varieties. To do this I concluded to cut them off .near the ground, and to bud tho shoots that would grow up from the tttump. ( Thoy wero all, therefore, ?awn off an inch or two from the ground, on tho 19th of No vember, 1870, and I expected and desired a thick growth of shoots next spring. But not a shoot, sucker, or bud ever started fiom one of those stumps or' roots? The destruction was entire and completo with every tree. ' It seems,' physiologically, that the same effect should attend tho same treatment of plants we wish to eradicate. Worth Trying. ( It is said that sowing of Buckwheat broadcast in the preparation of a turnip crop, will prevent the ravages of tho turnip fly, that when tho turnips havo attained their rough leaves, the Buckwheat may be cut and taken away without any . further danger from the insect. This experiment might be tried without much pains or ex pense. It would not bo too much trouble to go over an acre or two with tho mowing machine and cut down the Buckwheat and cart it pff. All kinds of stock could eat it without detiiment, or it might bo thrown Into aheap to make manure. It Is exceed ingly annoying to the earnest farmer to have his turnip Crop all nipped off by in sects, and if any moans can be employed to prevent it without too much labor and expense, ' it will be wise to give it a trial; It is further said that lettuce seed scattered on the cucumber hills at the time of plan ting will prevent tho ravages of the yellow bug ; this would be an experiment easy to try. The lettuce plants could bo dostroyed by tho hoe as soon as the cucumbers were out of danger from the bugs. The know ing ones have further said that riOpples are a sure protection against every specios of obnoxious fly and bug, and that Russian leather is safe BgaitiHt the moth, that often destroys the binding of books, on account of the odor of tho bark with which it was tanned. Spirits of turpentine and cedar shavings will protect) clothing, from the same ou account of the odor they, impart. It will not; cost, much to try either or all of these experiments, and if any should prove successful the result is worth knowing. ' Keeping Cream.1, ' '" Noxfc in importance to having milk per fectly pur'o and sweet and froo from all animal' odors, comes the matter of keeping the cream after it is taken off the milk In .. Jhe flrsli placo, the, , less milk there f is wi$ tiio'ercam at thq Unto i , is, set in the creatri jar tho( bettef. A great deal of carelessness is stiown in. tlrltf matter, for . be it known thnt milk makes cheese, while the . croam only makes ' butter, and the more milk there is in the cream at churning time tho more cheesy-flavored will be the buttor, and, thorefore, the more likely to spoil afterward, unless excessively salted, Itcally pure, good butter requires very little halt, I while butter as ordinarily made will soon spoil, unless well salted or kept cov ered with brlno., .','; ' . , tW.X'1 nunibojof thrifty young cork trees are growing in California, from seeds Bent out by the Patent Office.
