A new material has como quite cxton
Ively into use in Gormany, as a Hiilmtitute
for Lair in the stuffing of saddles, etc., con
stating of a mixture of flaxseeds and t allow.
The advantage of this substitute consists
primarily in the fact that tho mobility of
the seeds, one upon the other, prevents the
packing or Bottling in any particular place,
as often happens in saddles stuffed with
hair, thus causing any given pressure to be
readily and uniformly distributed over any
given surface. The tallow serves the pur
pose, too, of keeping the loathor tlexiblo,
and of preventing the absorption of perspir
ation protects the article itself, and pre
vents the back of the animal from becom
ing galled. Animals with sores or galled
spots on the back can be ridden with sad
dles stuffed with this material without any
inconvenience. The tallow also has the
effect of preventing the rotting of the flax
seed, and is to be added in sufficient quan
tity to give requisite softness to the entire
mass. An aromatio odor can be imparted
by introducing oil of turpentine or camphor
powder, and the durability considerably in
creased theroby. One part of the tallow,
to from six to ten parts of flaxseed, may
be used according to the temperature.
How to Catch Bats,
One of tho pests of tho farmer is rats. To
keep thorn within endurable bounds is some
what a difficult task, for a rat is as cunning
as a fox, and almost as hard to catch ; but
there is such a thing as working strategy
on it. A rat never digs a hole unloss it
has some projection to begin with, say a
6tone, a stick of wood, or any thing else
that makes an angle with the ground ;
a cellar or room it will run around by the
wall, and is decidedly averse to leaving it.
From this habit we have a bint how to out
gonernl it. The common steel trap Is the
best article for the purpose. Stand a box
or barrel, or other article., within four inch
es of tho wall, and in that open space set
the trap without anything to hide it. The
rat in following the wall will get into the
trap rather than goarouud the barrel.
When it is caught, smoke the trap with
a piece of paper, shift your barrel to
another place and set the trap as bofore.
It is said that if a man hides where crows
frequent, and they see him go there, they
will stay away until they see him leave. If
two men hide and one leaves, the crows
wilt go back to the one that is left, and this
is because a crow cannot count. This is bo
with the rat ; there is something in the
combination of the wall, the trap and the
barrel that it does not seem to understand.
The Simplest Known Cure for Diarrhea or
Summer Complaint.
Take about one gill of rice and placo in a
spider over tho fire, stirring it constantly
until thoroughly brown. Do not burn it.
As soon as it is thoroughly brown, fill the
spider with boiling water and lot it boil
till the mass is of the consistency of thin
paste. If the rice is not cooked perfectly
soft, add a little more wator and lot it boil
away again. Be careful at the last moment
that it does not burn on the bottom. When
cooked soft, turn into a bowl, sweeten with
loaf or crushed sugar aud salt to suit the
taste. Eat In milk.
The editor of this paper has made use of
the above remedy for nearly twenty years,
has induced hundreds of others to uso it
and never knew of its failure to cure in a
few hours. It is rarely necessary to repoat
the dose. A remedy so simple, so harm
less and bo readily accessible should be
published in every paper in the land.
Wenonah Advance.
t3flt is said if farmers will turn their
sheep into their potato patches they will
not touch the potato vines at all, but will
eat off all the weeds and grass to be found
This is a very important fact, as this prac
tice will not only keep down the weeds aud
increase the potato crop but it will prevent
the maturing of the weed seed, thus glv
ing the farmor less to contend with tho
next year. There is a triple profit tho grass
and weeds consumed by the sheep cost ab
solutely nothing, and that which ' would
otherwise be lost is saved, the weeds are
kept down, when it is impracticable to do so
by cultivating, because of the size of the
potato vines, and the weeds are prevented
from seeding. ,
tf"A writer in the Rural Now Yorker
believes that fence poats should be cut in
the " dark of the moon." lie alleges that
the sap ascends and de scends in all trees
with tho increase and decrease of the moon.
Which is very much liko moonshine.
