How ike Ledger was Stepped. Illus

highly retributive measure, the Philadelphia

that city:
This fearful threat reminds us of a Btory
afloat Mr. Swain years ago, when he was
the riroprietor of the Le&ger. By his ctftirso
in regard to some pnblio matter he had
offended a number of loaders, one of whom
he net on Chestnut -street, and thus ac

"Mr.; Swain, I've stopped the ; Ledger."
"What is that, sir?" . ' i
'Tve stopped the 'Ledger," was the stern
reply- , . - t., . - ' . ..f
"Great heavens !" said Mr. Swain, "my
dear sir that won't do.' Come with me to
the office. This must be looked into.
And, taking the man -with him, he entered
the office at Third and Chestnut streets,
There they found the clerks busy at their
debits ; then they ascended to the editorial
rooms and composing rooms, whore all was
as Buual. Finally they descended ' to tho
prow rooms, where the engineers were at
work. , .','..'.'"..'
" X thought you told me you had stopped
the Ledger," said Mr- Swain." u : .
"So I have," said Uio . olTondod sub

" I don't sco the stoppage.', Tho Ledger
aeems to bo going on." . ,7 ' ' ',"
" Oh 1 1 mean to say that is, that I ah
had stopped taking it." l
"Is that all I" exclaimed Mr. Swain.
" Why, my dear sir, you don't know how
you alarmed mo. As for your, individual
subscription I oare very little. Uood day
sir, and never make such rash assertions
again.' -:. '

breaker in the road one of the tracos of the
harness broke, which frightoned his horse,
and with one bound brought tho Judge
right on his feet in tho rearof the horso,
insido the shafts the horse pulling by the
holding-back strap. His constant rearing
and leaping immediately brought the Judge

breaking a wheel and the coupling, leaving
the hind-carriage and corpse on its sido and
strange to say the coflln was scarcely mov

alwavs utiricht and honorable in all his
doings, and who has left to his friends tho
odor of an unblomiHheo. character remained
unmoved and undisturbed as when kind
friends first placed him in his winding shoct.
The people in procession were much alarm
ed and ran at once to the assistance of tho
Judge, expecting to find him dund. Ho,
however, gathered himself up, nearly mi
nus coat and pants, with watch trailing by
tho chain. The Judge was considerably
bruised and sprained, but not seriously.
The coflln was placed in a epiintr-waizon,
and tho Judge, receiving his horse, rodo
home, procured. a cnauge ot ciotluug nttcu

tended the funeral, and is still improving
from his injurios. Huntingdon Journal.
