, The Deacon that Winked.
Wo have no hesitancy in stating that ,
among tho able-bodied male adults of liar-
aburg tho vory common bevorage known
as " soda water," and which is dealt out so
unsparingly at almost every corner during
the heated term, is considered, to use their
own language, a . . thiu drink." But as
the ingonious mixture of wind and water
is termed " thin," strong liquors, such as
whiskies, are altogether too " thick" - for
steady, warm weather drink ; and so the
imbiber who must "moisten his iluos"
with some liquid refreshment seeks a plea
sant combination of the two classes of drink
which form a happy combination that ex
hilarates, yet is not intoxicating. It is
customary among theso bibulous go-betweens
to enter a drug store, call for soda
water, and name their syrup, at the samo
timo giving a wink to tho dispenser of
slush," who takes the goblet, in which
ho places tho Byrup, then stoops down be
neath tho counter or retires to a back room
whero by some mystoiious chemical chango
tho contents are colored darkly, and the
soda is then lot in upon the mixture, which
is handed to the customer with a wink from
the clerk. So much for the process. Now
for the sequel. s '
Ou Saturday a vonerablo gentleman from
tho country, who is a respcctablo church
deacon, a justice of the peace, a member of
tho "Band of Hope," and a Good Templar
in his native village, came to this city to
trade a little in dry goods and purchase
such agricultural implements as he needed
to plant and cultivate his spring crops.
The deacon is strictly temperate, and never
looks upon tho wino when it is red any
more than ho docs when it is any other
color. Unfortunately our old friend had
suffered from opthalmia in his early days,
which left him with an optical peculiarity
which caused his left upper eyelid to drop
every few seconds, and to thoso not famil
iar with his infirmity gave him the appear
ance of winking intentionally.
Tho "deacon" is passionately fond of
soda water, and such light boverago. IIo
loves to feel the gaseous compound cours
ing down his throat, and creating internal
commotions and typhoons, that, however
endurable by older persons, throw babes
into agony, and requires" prompt doses of
peppermint. So on Saturday, after ho had
bought a few shovels, plows, and a Dollcy
Vurden for his wife, he thought he would
fill up with soda water and drive on, toward
home. IIo entered a drug store, inquired
the price of tho desired refreshment, de
posited his scrip and awaited his mixture.
" What syrup do you want?" said tho
urbane clerk, as ho mopped oft' the maiblo
counter with tho towel he used a moment
buforo to reuiovo the honest sweat from hi
brow. "Oh! give mo sassaparilly. That is
about as healthy as anything ; I guess."
Hero tho deacon's eyelid went back on him
and dropped quickly. '
"AH right 1" replied tho fountain ten
der, as he disappeared below tho counter,
and canio up a moment later with tho
driukiug-glass, containing about three lin
gers of "Bassaparilly," to which ho added
the other ingredients, and handed it to tho
deacon. Tho latter drained the contents
to tho vory dregs, then brushed tho froth
from his mouth, smacked his lips and said:
" That syrup is a lectio stronger than
they generally mako It ; but my blood is
out of order, and I guess I'll take another
glass" At the same time his eyelid flut
tered meaningly, as before.
Tho dose was repeated, and tho soda
water bibber loft tho store. About half an
hour later he entered another establish
ment whero a sign announced " Soda and
Mineral Water on Draught" It was no
ticed the deacon walked as if he had the
string-halt, as he entered the door, and
that his spectacles were upsido down on
his noso. IIo called for " Congress wator"
at that placo saying ho did not feel quite
right, and was afraid he had used too much
syrup in his soda wator nt the other store,
or elso ho was bilious. His optical weak
ness exhibited itself as he spoke ; and, re
turning tho wink, the clerk retired to a
dark closot, then returning, filled up tho
glass with plain " Congress," and gave it
to our" " tightually slight" friend, who
swallowed it without a murmur.
How many "sodas" tho deacon stored
away beforo he left the city we aro unable
to say ; but ho was found late in the day
asleep in his wagon, with a plow-point for
a pillow, and sovoral yards of Dolly Varden
calico gracefully draped about his poison
for a covering. He rovlved sulliciontly to
inform a stranger that ho had beeu "drug
ged," and a subsequent visit to the locali
ties where he had takon soda water de
veloped the fact that his unfortunate habit
of winking a defect over which he had
no control was the cause of all his trouble.
The soda-water dispenser nupposed him
to be "one of the boys," and every timo
his eyelid dropped took the bint. The
deacon escaped the "jimjams," but says
hereafter he will wear a "blinder" over
that eye when be purchases summer driuki
or else write his order on a slate.
Ciy"Mr. Cobb ha married Hiss Webb.
He knew that they wore meant to be joined
as toon as he spied her.
