FARM AND HOUSEHOLD ITEMS
We Invito communtcnttonafrom nil TKrtnnfwhonre
interested in mattert properly belonging to this
department.
Hints to Farmers.
In Rcrowing nuts into any pin t ot ma
chinery, in cold weather, bo careful tlicy do
not contract after being screwed on tight
and become immovable aftewavds. ,
In plowing or teaming on the road in hot
weather, always rest the horses on nn em
inence, where one minute is worth two in
a warm valley.
In setting out young orchards, always
register tho varieties immediately in a book,
whore they iHay be referred to in a few
years, when the treos commence bearing,
and the lables are lost and name forgotten.
In laying a garden for fruits and vegeta
bles, place everything in drills or rows, no
that they can bo cultivated by a horso, and
thus save the oxpenso of hand labor.
If beets aro harvested properly, in good
dry weather, they will not bo likely to re
tain much earth, especially if tho soil is
light. Otherwise, pains must bo taken to
kuock tho earth off.
Paint all tools exposed to the woathor,
and if with a light-colorod paint they will
not heat, warp or crack in tho sun.
Dip well-seasoned shingles in a lime
wash) and dry them before laying, and
they will last much longer, and not become
covered with moss.
Always tio a halter by first making a
slnglo loop, and thrusting tho end of tho
lialter through this loop. This is quickly
untied, and will nover como untied itself.
Dip tho ends of nails into grease, and
they will drive easily into hard wood where
they otherwise doublo and break.
Causes of Dew.
If dew fell, it would fall for the samo
reason that rain falls ; but dew docs not
fall, it is simply a deposit of moisture, al
ways contained in tho air to a groater or
lesser dogroo, and which, whon thero is
enough of it, will always form on any cold
body exposed to the moist air, in precisely
tho samo way that a cold bottle or stono,
taken from a cold cellar, and suddenly ex
posed in the shado to tho moist, warm sum
mer air, will become wet ; this is not sweat
ing, nor does this moisture como out of tho
bottto or Btone, as many peoplo beliove but
from tho air. It is for tho samo reason
that moisture will condense against the
window-panes, when the air is cold out
side, and moist inside, the moisture slowly
freezing, while its deposits form crystals of
ice, which we so often admire in winter.
When the weather is cool enough, tho
moisturo deposited will even freeze on
plants and grass, and then we call it hoar
frost : if it does not freczo, it is simply dew.
The only point left to bo explained is, why
does the ground become so cool during tho
night, so much cooler than the air abovo it
as to cause tho latter to deposit its mois
ture ? This was, for many years, a vexed
problom, till Wells first suggested the radi
ation of obscure heat, which takes place
from the surface of the earth through the
clear atmosphere into tho spaco above, and
so causes the surface to, become much cool
er than tho air itself. IIo demonstrated
this by means of thermometers placed at
different heights, and also by the fact
that dow is only deposited on cloudless
nights. When there aro clouds, they reflect
the boat, or prevent it from escaping. Tho
surface of the earth thus boing kopt from
cooling," no dew is deposited. Manufac
turer and Builder.
Labor Thrown Away.
A gentleman in California, who has gone
into the Angora goat business extensively,
and has a large ilock of goats, last full
built a spacious corral, and erected woath
er-proof sheds that he might protect it from
his property from the iuclemcut weather,
When the first storm came, ho drove all
Lis goats into the corral wheu night caruo.
Late in tho evening he thought ho would
go and look after his property. A careful
examination disclosed to the astonished
goat-ownor that not one of his live stock
was to be found inside of sheds or corral
Just as our Angora capitalist was about to
leave in tho profouudest disgust with his
investment, he happened to elevato his lan
tern and cast bis eyes upward, whon lo and
behold, there was his entire flock perched
on top of tho shed which ho bad construct
ed with so much care and expense, evident
ly enjoying the heavy rain-storm whioh was
pouring down. Who says that goats won't
thrive anywhere aftor this?
Z3TA Neighbor informs us that the best
preventive against ououmber bugs is a tol
erably strong decoction of asafoctida aud
water sprinklod upon the vine. Oar infor
mant states that not a bug will come near
the vines so treated, and he further belloves
If the same kind of decoction vh used on
potato vines, it would be effectual against
the depredations of the potato bug.
