FABM AND HOUSEHOLD ITEMS
What A Hearj Sod Will Do.
The nod makes the com. This may be
taken as an axiom, as undoubted as that a
straight line is the shortest distance be
tween two points. If the sod Is right the
corn can take of itself. What is wanted
is a mass of roots rilling the soil to the
depth of three, four or five inches or mora
and such a mat of vegetation on the sur
face as will inevitably belong to such amass
of roots. Now, what such an amount of
vegetable matter easily decomposed, and
such as corn leaves to feed upon would
measure, can be very easily estimated. It
would certainly be within bounds to say
that there would be on every square rod of
ground 00 cubic feet of matter equal in
fertilizing power to average barn-yard ma
nure. This is over three-quarters of a cord
per square rod ; and 100 rods going to make
up an acre, there would be over 120 cords
'of manure to the acre. This amount of
barn-yard manure would seem perfectly
bewildering to a farmer, and would be be
yond the power of many to haul out and
spread. And here it is on the spot, in the
most perfect shape possible to be utilized.
Does it need then, any further argument
to show clearly that a heavy soil, is the
best, cheapest and most easily handled
manure a farmer can procure or invent ?
The vexed question of whether one should
plow deep or shallow for corn, here gets a
satisfactory and simple reply. With such
a sod or any sod, we may say, one must
plow sufficiently deep to get enough loose
soil on the top to allow the barrow to work
and make a seed bed. No more, no less.
If your sod is such a one as we lately saw
from a pasture on a farm in Eastern Penn
sylvania, the plow must necessarily go sev
en or 8 inches beneath the Burfuco before
enough soil can be obtained wherein to
make a seed-bed. The average crop on
this farm is over 100 bushels of shellod corn
per acre, and the secret, if there is any, is
in this sod. Why should it be doubted ?
It is a simple examplo in proportion ; as
sod is to sod, so corn to corn. And by this
we may learn what a heavy sod will do.

A Lesson For Ulrls.
An intelligent gentleman of fortuno,
visiting a country village in Maine, not far
from Bangor, was hospitably entertained
and lodged by a gentleman having three
daughters. Two of these, in rich dresses,
entertained the distinguished stranger in
the parlor, while one kept herself in the
kitchen assisting her mother in preparing
the food and setting the table for tea, and
after supper in doing the work until it was
Anally completed, whon she also joinod hor
sinters in the parloror the remainder of the
evening. The next morning the same
daughter was again in the kitchen, while
the other two were in the parlor. The
gentleman, like Franklin, possessed a dis
criminating mind, was a close observer of
the habits of the daughters, and watched
an opportunity to whisper something iu
the ear of the industrious one, and then
left for a time, but revisited the same fami
ly, and in about a year the young lady of
the kitchen was conveyed to Boston, the
wife of the same gentleman visitor, where
she now resides in an olegant mansion.
The gentleman whoso fortune she shares,
she won by judicious doportmeut and well
directed industry.
Forest Planting.
Many bushels of nuts have been trans
ported from the east and planted on prairie
farms and failed to grow because those en
ga ged in doing It, did not know how to se
cure the vitality of the nuts from the timo
of gathering until planted. I will here
give the reader some valuable hints on
this matter, which may bo useful not only
in the west but in the oast.
'Chestnuts, hickory-nuts, shellbarks and
acorns,if suffered to become dry, the vitality
of tho germ is destroyed and can never bo
revived. As soon as gathered, th ey should
be packed in moss, slightly moistened and
transported at once to their intended desti
nation. On arrival, they should be planted
immediately or buried in the earth until
the next spring. Freezing will not injure
them if there is a few inches of soil on
top of them. If wintered in this way they
will sprout vory early in the spring and
should be planted as soon as the frost is
out. If loft too late the sprouts are easily
brokon off and they rarely produce others.
Check Itilus.
Professor Fritohard, of the Royal Veteri
nary College, Loudon, says: "I would
therefore say, that instead of preventing
horses from falling, the check-roin is calcu
, lated to render falling more frequent. Oth
er not uncommon results of its use are
distortion of the windpipe to sucE a dogree
as to impede the respiration ever afterwards
excoriation of the mouth and lips, paralysis
of the muscles of the face, etc. It is a use
less appendago, supported only by fashion.
I feel that If this were more generally
understood, numbers of excellent persons
who now drive their favorites with check
reins would dlsoooUnue to do so,
