A Mollirr and Her Infant nurncd to Death.
Tho LouUvillo Ledger of the 20th says;
Wo received yostorday, from an officer
of tho steamer Morning Star, tho . particu
lar of one of tho saddest accidents we have
been called upon to record for some tiino.
Mr. John Smith, his wife and infunt child
lived most happily together in Crawford
county, Indiana, not far from Leavenworth,
and near tho littlo town of llrownsbiiig.
On Wednesday evening last about 8
o'clock, our informant states, Mr. Smith
left his residenco for the purpose of going
to town to make some purchases of groce
ries, and remained away a couple of hours,
Upon his return home Mr. Smith, as ho
neai ed tho house, heard tho cries of his in
fant child, and hastened his steps toward
the door. Upon entering the liouso he was
shocked and terrified at seeing his wife ly-
ing with her head in the lire, tho head ab
solutely burned to a cinder. Near her lay
the infant, one arm burnt off about tho
wrist, and its body much burned near tho
shoulders. Tho husband, appallod by tho
terriblo sight, still had presence of miud
enough to drug his wife and child from the
fire-place and extinguish the fire; and thcu,
with a shriek, fell fainting to tho floor,
where he was soon after found by tho near
neighbors, who had heard his cry of horror,
and rushed into the house to ascertain the
cause of it. The child languished until tho
next day, when death put un end to its ter
riblo sufferings.
Tho calamity lias nearly dethroned tho
reason of Mr.' Smith, who lived upou the
most happy and affectionate terms with his
little family. Mrs. Smith was occasionally
the victim of spasms or tits, and it is sup
posed she was attacked by one of these
shortly after tho husband left home, and
fell into tho fire. Sho was a very amiable
and highly esteemed lady, and her sudden
and horrible death, and that of her infant,
caused the profoundest grief to all who
Vnew her. Wheu discovered oue-half of
her head was literally burned to a cinder,
nd a portion of tho brain mutter had run
out and baked into a hard substunco on tho
hearthstone.
Sharp Chaps.
Two young Jews who recently arrived in
New Bedford, were walking about the
town looking for employment, when they
noticed in the Custom House a quantity
of slightly damaged cofl'eo advertised to be
sold at auction iu a few days. At once form
ing their plans of operations, they immedi
ately visited various wholesale dealers, and
offered to securo them coil'eo at live per
cent, discount.
This was accepted and orders received
from reliable firms enough to cover tho
whole cargo in the Custom House. On tho
day of Bale, these two poverty-stricken Jews
were among the crowd of dealers assembled
to inspect tho various sacks of coll'ee.
When the bidding commenced theso two
advent ui some ones bid very low. Tho
crowd looked at the poor devils once, think
ing they wanted a sack or two, let their
bid remain good, and it was knocked down
to them at an cxtremly low figure.
" How much do you want, moro than
one sack ?" inquired the auctioneer. ,
" Tho whole cargo, sir," they quickly re
plied. ;
Tliero was a general laugh at their au
dacity, which increased when the auction
eer mockingly asked fur their security.
But the tables turned, when the poor Jews
very quietly drew out orders from leading
- merchant's whose genuineness could not
bo denied, and the hour beforo paupers
found themselves possessed of eighty thou
saud dollars, without expending one cent to
obtain it, or seeing tho coffee at all.
Burled Alive!!! a Well. '
A woll fifty feet deep, situated on tho
premises of Mr. Bowyer, near the Univer
sity of Virginia, Charlottesville, Va., being
out of order, a negro miin named William
Rives went down into it to re-ai range somo
stones which had fallen from tho lower
portion of tho wall. '
While ho was thus engaged at the bot
tom ol the well, the entire w all, composed
chieily of very largo stones, caved in and
and buried Itives beneath its ponderous
weight. It was thought lie was surety
crushed to death, but, strange to say, upon
about half tho debris being removed, the
workmen could hear him praying for deliv
erance from his horrible situation.
The accident occurred about 0 o'clock iu
the tiiorniim. Ho was taken out alive at
