Haying Ninety Cents,
i
Old Bogo was a miserly old follow. But
even mixers have to dio sometime, nnd old
Bogo was at length called upon to pay that
dobt which wo all murit pay. Ho wax aick
unto death, finding a partial recompenso in
his siiflbringa from tho fact that if he did
not eat anything aomcthing wns being
mivcd. Ilia physician told him that he was
rapidly approaching his end, and as ho felt
within himself that ho was rapidly ap
proaching it, it was evident to old Boe that
he must meet his end very soon.
How long huvo I to live?" asked old
Bogo, in a faint voice.
"Only half an hour," said the physician
taking out hi.s watch in n business manner,
nnd added, " is there any one, you would
like to send for a clergyman for iuHtitiiru?"
Old Bogo mused a lethargic way for a
moment, then started up as if a sudden
thought had struck him, raised his fccblo
hand nnd felt his emaciated chin, upon
which a two month's beard had grown,
then whispered hurriedly, "quick, bring
nie bring me a barber."
Tho barber came, and old Bogo said,
"You charge ten cents to shave live
men ?"
" Yes, that is our price," said tho barber.
"AVhut charge to shave dead men?"
"Ono dollar," said the barber, wondering
what ho meant.
"Then shave mo quick," said old
Bogo, nervously eyeing tho watch which
tho doctor held in his hand. Ho was too
weak to speak further, but tho doctur in
terpreted aright tho question that was in
his eyes.
"Fifteen minutes," replied the doctor.
Old Bogo Hindu a feeble motion as with
a lather brush, and the barber was at work
in ajilly. He performed his task with neat
ness and dispatch, and although the sick
man had several sinking spells of an alarm
ing liaturo yet ho boro up to tho end.
'When the last stroke of tho razor was given
old Bogo whispered in tones of satisfaction:
"That'll do ninety cents saved;" and
immediately expired.
tS!" A few days sinco there wore several
persons in a house where there was a child
two or three days old among them a black
eyed boy of four summers. When the
grandmother soon after came in with the
baby in her arms, ho was much pleased
with it, kissed it, and evinced every symp
tom of delight; asked his aunt where she
got it, nnd was told sho bought it of Dr.
Adams ; then asked how much she gave for
it. She told him ten dollars. Ho then
stood by her lap, on which tho child was
sleeping, his eyes beaming with intense
satisfaction. Tho babe soon woko and
squalled vociferously. Instantly his couu -tcnanco
felhnnd with utter disgust pictured
on his beautiful face, ho turned around and
said
"Auntie, if I was you, I'd tako it back
to Dr. Adams and get my ten dollars back
again !"
CSrAn interviewing Halcigh, N. C, re
porter visited tho prison, and questioned a
big black fellow why ho wo there, who
answered: " Stcalin chicken, bors." "How
long are you in for?" "Three motifs,
bors." " Seems to me that is a long time)
for so small a matter?" "Yes, Hair; and
it wuren't much a chicken nccder. An' I
didn't steal him too, but daro wur a lot.
said I did. Dore wur a hoop nioro swore I
didn't steal it."
tiJ'BoBwell onco asked Johnson if there
was no possible circumstances under which
suicido would bo justifiable. "No,"' said
Johnson. "Well," said Boswell, "sup
pose a man had been guilty of fraud, and
that ho was certain to bo found out."
" Why then," was tho reply, "in that case,
lot him go to some country where he is not
known and' not to tho devil, wliero he is
known."
tW A young man was before Justice
-, of New York; as a witness,
and during tho courso of his examina
tion said something offensive, whereat his
honor rotortod; "Young man, if you speak
in that way again, this court will forget Its
dignity and punch you in tho snoot."
t3T" Lawyer C. (entering tho olllce of his
friend Dr. M., and speaking in a hoarse
whisper) " Fred I'vo got such a cold this
morning that I can't speak tho truth."
Dr. M. "Well, I'm glad that it's nothing
that will interfere with your business."
3?" An exchange says, "Nobody has
fallen from a balloon for a woekback." It
wouldn't bo very good for a weak back,
anyhow, if they did.
tW An old lady, hearing somebody say
that the mailt were vory irregular, said,
" It was just so in my young days no
trusting uny of them."
tW " If you do not give mo a dime,"
said a hopeful to his mamma, " I know a
boy who has got tho measles and I'll go
and catch them.
t37" A Western editor speaks of his rival

"He knows ho lies; I novcr stolo his swill!'
