8 FOREIGN NEWS. 12T" There is eonsiilornble exoitmcnt in lmlittcal cio- ien Jn England over the Amer ican claims us presented t the board of Arbitration. Many lending journals insist ,hat the J bhoiild Iks withdrawn, and much dissat inaction is expressed with Mr. Gladstone for his .defense of the American position. At tho meeting of Parliament on the 7th iust, Mr. itiilph Osboruo addressed the House at longtli, and in the coarse of bis remarke said the Alabamaiucstlon was the most momentous one Knglandhad been called to pas upon within a century. He compared the iiwtute lawyers wha oomposod the American commission with novices who represented , England, and said the latter had been ifompletcly outwitted. If, he said, the lawyers had planned English ease, we would have escaped 'with the pay ment of six millions sterling. Tho Ameri can commissioners had served tlieirconntry well and arfitevnd a triumph. tlfLoiidon, J-'eb. fl. Tho steamship Col orado, whkih sailed from Liverpool yester day for Now York, when just outsido tho Mersey was run itito with great violence by Jhe steamer Arabian, Inward bound. The Colorado received severe damages and run iislioio to prevent her from sinking in deep water, with all aboard. The Arabia, which was comparatively uninjured, rescued all tlio passengers of the Colorado, except iive in the steerage, who it is supposed jumped overboard in tho panic which followed tho uliock of the collision, and were lost. The passengers were brought back to Liverpool, where they will be transferred to another steamer. More liailroud Itohberleti. For some months past tho Adams Ex press cars on tho tho Pan-IIandlo Railroad have sulTorcd more or less from the depre dations of thieves who would deplete the through cars, from Now York to Cincinnati, of anything valuable they could lay their hands on. The robberies generally occurred between this city and Cincinnati, and of lato the detectives of this and tho Queen city have been endeavoring to lay oflictul lingers upon tho guilty ones. Fortius purpssc, on last Thursday night, a detective took a "secret passage" in a loaded express car between this city and Cincinnati. Nothing occurred to attract tbo officer's attention until tho car had passed Xenia, Ohio, when the detective observed a youug man emerge from among ii lot of bales, boxes and packages, and deliberately set to work to open one of tho safes. The detectivo at once sprang from bis hiding-placo and attempted to arrest the thief. A desperato strugglo ensued, during which the would-be robber received a shot from the detective's pistol, which, it is supposed, will end the young man's career. The wounded man was taken on to Cin cinnati and there placed in Jail, where bis injuries were attended to. From statements made by the prisoner, who gave his name as James Trimble, Mr. Ilazcn, one of Cincinnati's chief detectives, concluded that a brother, employed as an usher in one of the theatres in tins city, was also in terested in the robberies. Accordingly, Mr. Ilazen visited Pittsburg, and yesterday caused tbo arrest of the eldor Trimble A few days ago the young man last refer- ed tojaccompanied bis brother to Cincinnati, riding on tho train which his brother is ac cused of robbing. At tho request of Mr. Ilazen he produced a watch, set of shirt studs, watch-chain, and a suit of clothes, all of which bis brother made him presents of. Although no information has been mado against tho young man he has been bold for further examination. The friends of tho Pittsburg prisoner feel confident of his innocence. Pittsburg Comvurcial of tht nth imt. A Terrific Explosion. The terrible explosion which took place on the 18th ult., at tbo Greenwich marshes, near London, occurred in a cartridge fac tory where there were several hundred cases of ball cartridges. While the foreman and about thirty young women, from sixteen to twenty years of age, wore employed in breaking up the cartridges, without a mo ment's warning a terrific explosion occurred, with a tremendous crash that was heard for several miles round. ' The unfortunate girls many of whom wero instantly in flames, rushed screaming from the building. The less injured ran home across tho marshes and tidal ditches; while others more serious ly scorched, threw themselves, or were thrown down and rolled in the mud, iu order to extinguish the Jinnies. The roof of the building was blown away by tho first concussion, and a portion of the walls which, measured 60 feet in one direction by 20 in another, was knocked down. tfOsi farm at Ogdensburg, N. owned by one Axtell, a two-year old Ayrshire bull and a yearling ram recently fought a most desperate battle, which continued two days, at short intervals. In the last reund tho bull was knocked com pletely out of time, and fell dead, having .succumbed to the fearful butting of his lighter, but mora aotive assailant.
