small-pox In Brooklyn, N. Y., on Tuesday

township, Switzerland county, Ind., was

to go to bed, and died about eleven o'clock.
The assassin fired through the window and
escaped.
CWThe New Bedford Standard says tho
entire catch of whalebone by the Arctic
fleet last season was only 28,000 pounds,
and, 23,081 pounds have arrived in that
city and Boston by the Paciflo Railroad,
the balance being on board the ship Europa,
of Edgartown, bound homo.
t& A few evenings ago a kerosene lamp
standing on a table in the Curran House,
Stevens' Point, Wisconsin, exploded from
some unknown cause. The concussion
caused the explosion of fifteen others,
which had just been trimmed and lighted
for use. Prompt action prevented a con
flagration. Eff"" A special dispatch to the Cincinnati
Commercial from Frankfort, Ky., says a
short time since a party of disguised Ku
klux visited the house of a citizen in that
county while a wedding was in progress
and took possession of the premises. They
fired off pistols and danced over the floor.
The fright occasioned to tho daughter of
this citizen caused her to go into spasms,
succeeded by insanity.
tST The St. Peter, Minn., Tribune, tolls
this : Little Johny Rogers, is five years old,
full of mischcif, and goes to school. The
other day, tho teacher having exhausted
moral persuasion, gave Johny a noto to do
liver to tho principle, which read as follows:
" Mr. Metonlf : The bearer deserves a se
vere punishment."
Johny was suspicious he smelt a mice
and on reflection he concluded not to go to
the principal's room. Meeting a Nor
wegian bey in the hall, ho inveigled him
into delivering the note and went off to play.
The principal read the note and at once
went for "the bearer," who departed a
sadder and wiser Norwegian.
tW A desperate shooting affair occurred
In Charlestown, V. Va., on last Tuesday
under tho following circumstances: Dur
ing the war tho lands of John Clarkson, a
wealthy Virginian, were sold for taxes, and
a suit was commenced to recover tho prop
erty. During the progress of the trial
Clarkson called the dofendant, U. S. Mar
shal Stack, a liar. Stack struck Clarkson,
and a general melee ensued, in which seven
shots were fired. The room was small and
more than a dozen persons wero present.
Clarkson was shot four times, and one
wound, being in the breast, is dangorous.
All the parties are wealthy and respectablo,
and the afl'air has caused a great excite

London, January 24th. A sevcro storm
commenced hero yesterday evening and las
ted all night, raging with great violence.
Tho gale at times became a hurricane, and
rain poured down in torrents, flooding tho
lower portions of tho city. The Parliament
building was damaged, the water penetrat
ing the roof in soveral places and injuring
the decorations and furniture.
The weather reports say that the storm
extended through the British isles and
reached some portions of the Continent.
The telegraph wires wo prostrated in vari
ous directions and remmunications inter
rupted. In the Channel and on the Irish
coast tho storm was excessively severe.
Serious disasters to shipping arc feared,
although, partly owing to the derangement
of the wireB, no wrecks are yet reported.
Affairs in Mexico aro in a terrible con
dition. Dissatisfaction exists in every de
partment, and murder and robbery is rapid
ly on the increase. Only a few days since a
railroad train was attacked at Puebla, and
seven passengers wero killed, ono being a
little girl.
At Madrid, on tho 2.1th inst., during tho
session of the Spanish Cortes, Senor Diaz
Qnintera addressed the members on tho
subject of the relations which exist between
the mother country and Cuba.
Towards the conclusion of tho speech he
asserted that " it is quite time for Spain to
cedo Cuba to the United States," an ex
pression which was literally howled down
by the whole House.
The Mail Steamer from Rio Janeiro,
brings news of a terriblo steam disaster.
The steamer America, plying between Rio
mid Montevideo, while on a trip from tho
latter place, on the night of December 22,
took fire. The flames spiead with great
rapidity, and the vessel wan soon burned
to the water's edgq,, A largo , number of
passengers wero on board, of whom eighty
seven lost their, lives, being either burned
