Hens In Place of Dogs.
There is hardly a family that does not
throw sway enough table scraps to keep
at least half a dozen hens, and mnny thnt
keep a nuisanco in the shape of a dog,
that does no good, but costs moro than a
dozen Rood hens, compluin that they onn
not afford to keep hens. One dog in a
neighborhood is a greater trouble to the
neighbors than a flock of hens would be,
for if hens are well fed at homo they will
rarely go awoy. ?ut who ever saw a
dog that was not a pest running across
the newly-made garden, and sticking his
nose into everything.' Kill off the curs
and give the food to the bens, and you
will find pleusure as well us profit in so
doing. Wo wish that there was a tax of
one hundred dollars on every dog kept in
the country. Those that are of value as
watch dogs could be retained, while the
host of snarling dirty curs would give
place to some more useful and lees troub
lesenie pet.
To Settle Coffee.
The genuino article can be nicely set
tled by beating an egg and stirring it in
a batch of coffee, just as it is browned.
The coffee must be cool enough so as not
to cook the egg. It must but be left near
the fire long enough to dry. It settles the
coffee as well as to use a whole egg every
time it is prepured for the tablo and does
not take near as many dozen in the courso
of the year. The coffee-pot should stand
a few moments after being taken from
the stove, or havo a little cold water put
in.
Adulteration of Clovcr-sccd.
A confidential circular from an enter
prising German in Hamburg haB lately
come to light containing an offer to sell
levernl tons of sand suitable for mixture
with clover seed, the grains of which re
semble the seed so closely that it is almost
impossible to distinguish theui by the
eye. The writer of this circular announ
ces that this saud is in great demand,
especially in England for purposes of
adulteration.'' Two colors aro supplied,
oue for red clover and ono for white.
1 ' A Crop that Paid.
A man from Bay llivcr was in the city
yesterday, says the Newborn, N. 0.,
Times, disposing of 12,000 pounds of leaf
tobacco which he had grown on ten acres
of ground, and for which he had been
offered 10 cents per pound. . This enter
prising farmer is from tho North, and
has lived in this section but little over a
year, and on his first venture on ten acres
of land will probably clear one thousand
dollars.
X
Apple Dumplings.
As the season for apple dumplings is
at hand, it may not be out ol placo to say
how they can bo made so that every oue,
even of delicate digestivo powers, it is
said, can cat of them with impunity.
Make the dough of about one part flour
to six parts potatoes, boiled and mushed
thoroughly and every lump removed. It
makes a good paste and the dumplings can
be enjoyed by every one without the tear
of unpleasant results.
86?" An English farmer possesses a nov
elty in the form of a cow with a wooden
leg. The animal having lauied one of
her hind logs, a skillful veterinary surgoon
tried the experiment of amputation. The
operation was successful. A wooden lo:
was provided, and the cow walks about
very comfortably.
To KelicTe Frosted Feet.
To relieve tho intense itching of frost
ed feet, dissolve a lump of alum in a little
water, and bathe the part with it, warm
ing in before the fire. One or two appli
cations is sure to give relief. 1
To Remove Salt From Fork.
Take a piece ef pork from the brine,
and place in tonr milk for a lew hours;
then put in eold wutcr a short time, and
you will return it almost to its former
freshness.
To Keep lusccts from Smoked Meats.
Whilo smoking your meat, with chips
or saw-dust, put on the tiro a tew red pep
pers. The lumes will prevent all insects
from attacking your meat.
S&" A correspondent of au Illinois
paper published at Galesburg, says that
be has cured several cults and cows that
had been bitten on tho nose by rattle
snakes, by rubbing spirits of turpentine
on their heads
V Lemon for Cough.
' x Roast the lemon very carefully without
burning it ; when it Is hot, cut and squeeze
Into a cup ' upon three ounces of sugar,
Uncly powdored. Take a spoonful when
ever your cough troubles you. - It is good
und agreeable to the taste. Rarely lias It
