about tho jail in Jefiersonvillo, Indiana, to
lynch a negro, but tho prisonor was taken
out secretly by a back-way, and is now in
the jail at Chaiicstown, Indiana.
tW In Hamilton, Ohio, a few days since,
. a fee of twenty-five cents was collected from
all persons who entered a church for tho
purpose of witnessing a marriage. Tho
money was given to tho young couplo to
start them in life.

inst., at a political gathering in Court
square, an anvil being used as a cannon ex
ploded, killing two men, and mortally
wounding two or thrco othcis. Several
more were also badly injured. This un
fortunate accident ended tho meeting.
Among tho curious social facts de
veloped by the census statistics is tho ap
pearance on tho rolls of Pennsylvania of
ono family with seven pairs of twins, ono
family with six pairs, and another family
with four pairs. Tho mother of tho last
group had six other children, and was only
thirty-eight years old.
tSAtSt. Louis, on Saturday night a
. week, a negro man went to tho houso of
Sirs. Bass, living near Windsor, Missouri,
and demanded money. She refused it,w hero-
upon ho choked hei until sho was nearly in
sensible, and attempted to outrago her
person. Tlio negro was arrested next day,
taken to Windsor, and hanged by a mob.

breed, tho deformity resulting from a bro
ken back, was entered at tho Muskingum
county (Ohio) Fair as a Hungarian cock
of tho " Belavi Magyar breed," just import
ed, and the sapient Judges, after gravely
inspecting it, awarded it tho first premium
over ono of tho finest poultry shows ever
seen in tho country.

of age, daughter of a Mr. Freed, in Har
mony, Butler county, having dono some
thing amiss, somo ono jokingly told her sho
would have to go to jail for it ; whoroupon
she thought sho would thwart them as far
as tho jail was concerned, and having bor
rowed a spoonful of arsenic, (to kill the
rats sho said), she swallowed it all, but she
overshot tho mark, and so failed in doing
what she designed howeversho is still in a
critical situation. ,
