l'utent, Office, previous to tho war, and
their number has incrcasod every year,
the latter plants being fully equal in every
respect to thoso lirst grown. Suocessi'ul
experiments have also recently been
niado in South Carolinn, Tennesfeo and
Gi'liforuiu, and the climate of several other

lished bis method of packing butter, lie
has oaken tubs, with heads at each end.
Tl ley are 14 inches in diameter ut top,
9 inches at the bottom, and 1G inches
high. In packing, a cambric bag is made
to fit the tub, I ho butter is packed in
tho tub us it stands on the small cud
the sack being long enough to extend
above tho edges of the tub-aiid is pressed
down firmly until within an inch and n
half of the top, when u circular cloth is
laid over it, the edges of tho sack turned
down over that, ami a layer of fine salt
placed on it. The head is now put in its
place, the tub turned up, uud the butter
in the sack of course, falling down to the
bottom, leaves u space all around it in
which is tilled with brine poured through
a hole in the small end. When full tho
holo is corked up tight. Tho butter
floats in the brino and is effectually pro
served from tho uir, uud will keep for au
almost indefinite period.
