FARM AND HOUSEHOLD ITEMS F fni'ife eiwimvncntonii.from n prntiHionr interetd in matter properly belonging to tii) department, Destruction of Hats. SEVERAL years ago, wo took posses sion of nu nnuiont mansion, in which the rats reigned supreme. The uiglits wore mado hideous unto us by their noc turnal '' rambles and gymnastics. The revels they held banished deep from all but young eyes. A council of war was held on the side of thp bipeds, and scv- orai remeuies wuru iiruiiuauu -uui, cm, . rata, wero considered tho only means ot defence; so two good-sized grimalkins wero procured, and tho conflict raged (luring a whole scasou. Many of tho aged of tho tribo went the way of all ani mal flesh, but the prolificnoss of tho lemulcs was too much for their enemies, the cats. Another remody was sought and found ; copperas or sulphate of iron, is very obnoxious to rats. Mix it with whitewash, prepared in tho common way, and edd the copperas until it is quite yellow. Whitewash tho wholo cellar wall, Hides and celling, giving two coats of it if the underpinning is not well covered at first. Scatter the green crystals of tho copperas in every crevice and chink in the walls ; throw it broadcast into the corners of the rooms, and your rata will make a grand stamped o for other and more agrecablo quarters. At least that wag the result from our application of , it, All night there was hurrying aud scur rying in ratdom ; a new home must be nought. The next morning the cats bad rat sport in the wood-house and baru ; tho rats wero attacktcd, and forced to surren der hon dvYombat. The cats could not eat all their spoils in one day. It is now six years since the copperas whitewash, or rather yellow wash, was applied. . Every Spring, crystals of cop peras are thrown broadcast about the cel lar, and no rat dares show his whisker liead. Occasionally a timid squeak or a feeble gnawing is heard in the wall. The sounds are from new comers, who soon beat a retreat. There ' is no gam boling among the old rafters no plan ing ball with butternuts, as of yore, in tho midnight hours. One huce cat. of the masculine gender, keeps watch and ward over the premises, but with all his watching and prowling around, he cannot feed himself, and is' forced to seek his meals in the kitchen. Id a closet where woe mice ' delighted 1 to creep and ' steal jellies and sweetmeats, bits of the cop peras were scattered, and not a trace of them ; is to be seen. .., ;, ; ' 1 Last Autumn our neighbors were sad ly troubled with rats ; apples, parsnips, anuashes and potatoes disappeared jmyste- riously, or were devoured on tho spot, but the contents of our boxes were untouched. The copperas doe not seem to poison thara no .dead ones wera found, except ing those brought in by the cats: but it appears to be obnoxious to them, and so they " vaaiooas the ranch.''.' J.'.,,' The ' copperas is an excellent disin fectant ; no better can be fonnd. for.' pur tfring old cellars, drains. . vaults, &c. It ia used every apring to sweeten tho milk collar, and a saucer of it always sits jo the wash stands and sinks. , It is very cheap only six to eight cents per pound. r I M communicated. 1 . .-,, Haw to Keep Fresh Bleat, i A correspondent who says he has tried it aeads tba iollowing : i To' persons livinn at a distance from meat marlceta, the following directions tor keeping meat may be of use.
