ZWA. Memphis bcllo challenged a man
to many. Ho valliantly accepted, and In
twenty minutes there was a wedding,' and
in twenty days a divorce.
ZW Tlirco boys were drowned in Phila
delphia, on Tuenday last. They had gono
in to batho in an old brick yard pond in
the edge of the city.
ZW A Chicago youth receives from his
lady lovo three letters daily, averaging
twelve pages each. He thinks of starting
a paper mill.
ZWS. C. Purvianco, of McLean county
111., has sold 2,000 bushels of corn, to be
dolivored in the fall, nt twenty eight cents
a bushel.
ZW The convicts in the penitentiary at
Topoka, Kansas, were allowed a holiday
and a good dinner on the Fourth. Two of
the judges were present and raado speeches.
ZW Tho horn of a Patagonian ox has
boon forwarded to Baltimore. It is sixty
five inches long, seventeen inches in circum
ference at the base, and will hold seven
quarts.
ZW In a town in Ohio, not long ago, the
womon went iu bands of two or three, with
their knitting and sewing, into tho dram
shops of the place, and spent the whole day
with their work.
ZWA- singular chargo was brought at
Springflold L. I., against 2 young mon and
S young womon. They were charged with
playing a game of cards in church during
service. Tho justice before whom the case
was brought reserved his docisiou till ho
could look up tho law on the subject.
ZW On the Oth hist., during tho storm in
Nebraska a train on the Fremont and Blair
railroad was lifted from the track, and was
blown twenty feet from the railn. An in
fant was killed, the mail agent was fatally
wounded, and fifteen other persons were
more or less hurt.
ZW On Friday laiit Win. Switzcr, aged
ten years, hung himself near tho mouth of
Indian creek, Floyd county Va. A little
girl aged six years, was with him at the
time, and it is thought he was tryiug to
frighten her and accidentally lost his foot
ing. His neck was broken by the fall.
ZW A terrific storm occurred on the 18th,
in Greenfield and Springfield townships,
Ohio, destroying tho crop to a great extent
uprooting fruit and forest trees, and un
roofing and blowing down several houses
and barns. The residence of Ilurlau Sim
mons, Esq., ono of tho finest places in the
State, was literally torn to pieces. Sever
al persons wero injured.
ZW Tho Council Bluffs Nonpareil tells
of a marriage which took place in that
city, a few days since, between B. T. Hoy
al, Aged sixty-five, and Mi.ss Annie Fiold,
aged eighteen. The parties met on the
cars this side of Salt Lake, and forming an
attachment for each other, got inarriod at
Council Bluffs. Both wero bound for the
same point iu Virginia.
ZW While the Rov. T. A. Sampson, col
ored, of Pine Blufi', Ark., was addressing
his flock, Sunday week, he was struck dead
by a flash of lightning. His funeral oc
curred on Tuesday, and while his remains
were being carried to tho gravo another
flash of lightning struck his cofllu, tearing
it to splinters and leaving it a ghastly sight.
He was then buried before any moro light
ning struck him.
ZW One of the temporary inmates of the
county jail, in Chicago, after smoking his
cigar, tho other night, with the comfort a
good conscience affords, quietly threw tho
burning stub luto the straw under his bed
and retired. It was not long before the
gentlemanly tenants thought they felt
somothing hot, and jumping up found their
snug quarters in flamos. With outsido as
sistance their valuable lives wore saved.

t3T" A most terrible storm recently occur
red in Iowa. Further particulars show that
it was the most severe that ever happened.
At Long Tree twelve houses were demol
ished,' and others unroofed. Tho depot
wator-tank and windmill are almost a total
wreck. Mr. Philips was picked up by the
wind and dashed to the ground with such
violenoo as to kill him instantly. His fam
ily were) all mora or loss injured, but no
others arc reported seriously hurt. Hail
stones were picked up ranging in size from
that of an egg to twelvo inches. ' 1 -;
ZW A newly-fledged Philadcdelphia doc
'tor recently settlod in Havana, 111., and the
first case ho had was a boy, who whilo shel
ling popcorn, got a kernel in his windpipe.
The doctor examined the case carefully
looked at the patient's tongue and then
told tho father of the boy to build up a hot
'fire. 1 When that was done the doctor told
them to take the boy and hold him over the
fire until the kernel got hot enough to "pop
but." The old man went up stairs and got
' his shot gun, but while he was loading it
the doctor escaped!
