railroad company for $23,000 damages,

Saturday a week in a railroad collision near
Newark N. J. Tho accident was caused
by two trains trying to pass each other on
the same track, through tho carelessness of
awitch tender. Quito a number wero also
injured.
t3f On Saturday morning a wock a
grain barrack on tho farm of Dr. Jacob
Shambcrgcr, in Baltimore county, about
two miles cast of Becklcysvillo, was struck
by lightning, and, with its contents about
600 dozen sheaves of wheat, totally destroy
ed. Tho loss is supposed to bo $000 or $800.
y A child was born at Manchester, Vt,
a fow days ago, which weighed only twenty-four
ounces, but was perfectly formed,
and hopes aro entertained of its living.
Its faco can almost bo covered by an old
fashioned cent, and a lady's finger ring
can be slipped on tho arm.
iiyOno hundred men passed through
McGregor, Iowa, recently in route to a
mountain of gold, professed to have been
discovered somo years ago by a man named
C. A. Itobson, while on his way home from
California. Each man had paid Kobson
$200 in consideration of his piloting the
company to tho new Eldorado.
tS" Hon. Daniel J. Morrell was thrown
from his carriage on the 7th inst., about
three miles from Johnstown, and very sori
ously injured his skull being fractured
and his back very seriously sprained. His
physicians entertain strong hopes of his re
covery, and at last accounts ho was in a
comfortable condition.
tW On Monday last week an unknown
man laid his head on the track of tho
Pennsylvania Railroad, at Thirty-fifth
street. A whole train of cars passed over
him, severing tho head from the body.
Before ho was killed he had written in the
hand near wher e his body was found, the
following : "James Davis, born 1830 ;
without friends ; destituto and tired of liv
ing. 137" The young son of a prominent In
dianapolis banker was sent to tho clearing
house, just before noon the other day, with
$13,000 in checks . IIo forgot all about his
errand and on his way home lost the bundle,
Fortunately about $7,UUO or tliem was
found by the messenger of another bank,
but the remaining $5,000 had gone. By
stopping payment loss was prevented, but
that young man's memory has improved.
(TIT Near Shabbona Grove, De Kalb
CO., 111., on the evening of the 8dinst, Miss
Joanna McCormick, aged 17, the boauti
ful daughter of Mrs. McCormick, a wealthy
farmer's widow, was shot dead while sit
ting at the supper table. John Reed, a farm
had, had invited hor to accompany him to
a Fourth-of-July celebration, and on her
rofusal he went to a neighbor's and borrow
ed a double barellcd shot-gun. With this
he shot the girl through the window, kill
ing her Instantly. He then fled.
tSf" Anna Brown, the notorious snake
woman, who has lecn puzzling tho doctors
for years, lias at last turned out to bo a
fraud. She has lately been at tho Wayne
county , N. Y., infirmary, and tho physi
cian, seeing the snake's head protrude from
hor mouth, seized her by the throat to pre
vent swallowing, and made her disgorge
the reptile, which proved to be nothing
more or less than a piece of black indla
rublier, that sho had been accustomed to
slip down her throat.
tW Rocently, Mr. Curtis, of Stratford,
Couu., went to his bam, and seeing some
thing dark in tho hay, which he supposed
to be a skunk, took a pitchfork and cau
tiously approached the object, and placing
the fork within a few feet of it was just
in tho act of sending it home with a ven
geance when ho thought ho saw a uinu's
ear, and on a closer insecMon he found it
really did belong to a man who had got in
to the barn unknown to any one to enjoy &
snooze. ' :.' :
