We see it stated in some of our exchanges that the salary of President Judges is to bo f 5000 per annum commencing with Juno 1st 1871. This is a mistake. That is the salary of tho Judge of the twelfth Judicial district, but all oth er President Judges except in the counties of Philadelphia and Allegheny, receive 4000 per annum. Associates receive $5. per day for each day employed, Provided that they shall not roceivo less than f 300 per year. yV Fatal Accident. At a recent meeting of the Board of Property, the Surveyor Gener al stated to tho Board that there was avery considerable falling off in tho payments on account of unpatented lands ; whereupon tho Board, having taken into consideration tho Act of Assembly and tho duties therein enjoined upon them, directed that tho Sur veyor General furnish the warantoe names and other data to the Attorney General for cases in tho scvoral counties, to be proceed ed upon by him under tho aforsaid act, af ter tho 1st day of December, 1871, should payment of the arrearages not havo been mado before that time. Very respectfully, J. M. CAMPBELL, Surveyor General. Persons wishing further information on this subject had hotter apply to S. II. Gul braith Esq., County Surveyor. A Truant Husband. Tho llarrisburg State Journal says : On Monday evening a week a deserted wifo mado her appearance at the Mayor's office, and claimed his efforts in ordor to secure trace of her husband, Tine Gordon, who had abandoned her in an unceremoni ous and heartless manner. From her state ment it appears thoy resided in Franklin county, near Chambersburg. Her husband loft her a few days since, to go to that place, where ho professed to havo business, promising to return the same day. Be coming uneasy and alarmed at his prolong ed absence, sho conclued to visit Chambers burg in search of him. Arrived there, she ascertained that he had gone to Ilarrisbug, and with a woman's devotion, followed him hither only to learn that sho was too late, and that he had extended his journey west ward. From this point a telegram was forwarded by the Mayor to Altoona order ing his arrest, and if not found there to send the dispatch to Pittsburg. A dispatch was received from tho chief-of-police of tho latter city, stating that he had been arrested, but through some informality was subsequently discharged. TJtancannon Items. Tho flro originated as stated abovo, either from the heated journals, or from fric tion caused by sand in the grain. Fires from these causes, though somewhat rare are not unknown as wo read of a similar cumstanccs last season. Shippentburg Aew. For The BloomjXeldTimet. President Judge. Mr. Editor, Sir In your Isauo of tho 11th inst., with reference to the President Judgship of this district, you ask why is there no candidate offered by Perry county. Tho reason is obvious. There is a well known principle of law, called " title by proscription," which may be thus staled : Where persons or a community have exor cised, and claimed to exercise a right for a great length of time, (formerly sixty years) "Whereof the memory of man runneth not to the contrary," tho right cannot be successfully resisted. Now, ever since the organization of Perry county, fifty-one years ago, tho President judgo has come from Carlisle, and oven for twenty years lcfore, making in all tenenty-one years whereby it is clear that Carlisle is entitled to the judgeship by prescription and no man can bo lawfully chosen from any oth er part of tho district. Besides it is doubt ful whether any legal mind could be educa ted up to the judicial standard elsewhere, for the location, air, and surroundings of that place aro highly favorable to tho growth of jurisprudence ; and as no ono could succeed to tho Aarouio Priesthood,ex ccpt ho came of the tribo of Levi ; so none can reach this judgeship unless from Car lisle. Herod inquired of tho wise men where Christ should be born, and they said in Bethlehem of Judea. So when tho quiet voter inquires of you whence say tho law and the prophets (profits) tho judgo of the ninth judicial district shall come, you may safely roply, " From Carlisle of Cum berland." Yours, conditionally, Jim Hefflefinger, who is studying law, but feels doubtful of the place; may remove to Carlisle. For The Bloomfield Timet. Eshcol, Perry Co., Pa. July 10th 1871. Ed. "Times;" The Post-Master Gen eral has appointed John D. Baker, Post Master of Roseburg P. O., changing the nam and the titetoKthcoL (Perry Co.. Pa..) The name is from the Valley or Brook of iLshcol in tbo land or Canaan. Eshcol, is situated about three miles east of Ickcsburg, in a littlo dell, through which passes a sparkling brook, inhabited bv speckled trout ; its banks festooned by a rich drapery of crapevines. which sucrcests the name, the book of the cluster of grapes, or feslicol. The use of a name is to distinguish that which is named, from other things. The less resemblance a name has to another, the better is it adapted to its uso. It will be seen by inspecting the list ot post ouices m tho u. ., that many names are very similar. There aro "burgs" and "towns" innumerable ; and "dells" and "dales" without limit. A long list of names begin with "Oak," another with "Chestnut" &c. &c.
