ly jumped from tho parapet of London
bridge into the Thames, a distance of thirty
feet, to savo a passenger who had fallen
overboard from a Woolwich steamer. The
rescued man offered to compensate bis de
liverer liberally, but he declined to receive
any reward.

tering her ear. Sho had imitated tho too
common practice of picking that organ
with a pin, and slipping from her lingers it
penetrated to such a depth that efforts to
extract it were unavailing.

Island road, Newburyport recently in
which thoro were three men and three
. women. The dress of one of the females
was caught iu some part of the carriage,
and before it could bo detached tho horso
started and dragged her along. Coming
on to Plumbush creek bridge, by some un
known means the girl was thrown off, fell
into the water and was drowned.

ation at some of the large railroad stations
InMass., that tells how long before the train
tarts: It reads, "This train leaves in ten
minutes," then iu nine, eight, etc., and
when tho index reaches 0, tho train starts.
Thus any passenger on entering a station,
knows just bow much time he has for get
ting tickets, checks, a nowspaper and a seat
without consulting a watch or clock to as
certain the hour of the day.
t3!T The court of appeals of Virginia has
decided that drunkenness is a proper sub
ject to be taken into consideration in de
termining whether a man is guilty of mur
dor in the first degree, three requisites of
which being willfulness, deliberation and
premeditationahd the first ease under that
decision was finished in Alexandria on
Friday last, the accused having murdered
a littlo colored girl during a fit of intoxica
tion. ' He was sentoncod to five years' im
prisonment. tW A drug clork recently put up a pro
scription for a young lady friend of a dose
of castor oil. Bhe innocently inquired how
it could be taken without tasting it. He
promised to explain to her, and in the
meantime proposed to drink a glass of soda
water with her. When he had finished,
he said: "My friend, you have takon your
oil and did not know it.." The young lady
was nearly crazy, and cried. "Oh dear,
it wasn't for myself I wanted tho oil, it was
for my mother." ,
