Agricultural Implements.
A recent number of Hearth and Home
thus speaks of n new stylo of plows and
harrows.
The " Committee on Iuiplcuicuts" at
most agricultural fairs pass judgment
upon new inventions nud appliances from
their appcaianco only. Should the God
frey devolving Mold-board l'low come bo
foro such a committee-, it would probably
bo passed by without notice, or condemn
ed at onco as impracticable In fact,
there was hardly ever a moro unpromis
ing looking implement than this plow.
So far as beam, standard, share, and han
dles go, this is just like any other plow,
and it is only when wo come to the mold
board that we find any difference. The
mold-board is, as tho uamo indicates, re
volving. There is a very short stationary
mold-board, but the main portion of it
consists of a disk attached to tho beam
in such a manner, that it can readily
revolve. As the furrow-slice is lifted
by tho share, it comes in contact with the
disk, which revolves, and by its motion
breaks the soil nud scatters it. One of
our staff, who employs Scotch workmen
only, took this plow to his farm with ma
ny misgivings. His mcu had been ac
customed to the long Scotch plow, and
ho feared that an implement so different
from those to which they had been accus
tomed would meet with little favor.
The plow was tried in different kinds of
land, and the verdict came back that it
was "the best plow ever put into the
ground." A skim-plow or jointer may bo
attached if weeds or long manuro are to
be plowed under. It seems to work with
as much caso to the team as any other
plow. In alluvial soil, it so thoroughly
crumbles, pulverises, and scatters the soil,
that its work appears more like that ol a ;
spado than like that left by an ordinary I
plow. Having described this strango j
plow, will now try to givo our readers
soino idea of tho
NISIIWIT. HARROW.
In noticing tho Godfrey Kcvolviug;
Moldboard l'low, wo alluded to the unpre
possessing appearance of the implement.
The same remarks apply with moro force j
to the Nishwitz Harrow, for a more un- i
couth looking implement never mado its ,
appearance. As with tho plow, all unfa- ;
vorable impressions, that the form of the j
harrow might give, disappear when its op- j
oration is witnessed. Instead of the
teeth of tho ordinary harrow, or tho small
plows of Shares' harrow, the Nishwitz
lias in their place a series of revolving
iron or stool disks, which uro slightly
dishing toward the frotlt. The beams of i
the harrow may be set ut different an-
gles, and tho revolving teeth may be set i
in any desired position, according to the j
character of the soil. In passing over tho i
soil, tho teeth turn and throw up audi
crumble it, in the most complete uud sat- j
isfactory manner. Unlike the ordinary
harrow, this implement does not compact ;
tho soil, but leaves it exceedingly light I
and mellow. )n light soils this is an ob- j
jeetion, which can be obviated by the use
of the roller. In covering grain, this j
harrow has been found to work admirably,
and in the preparation of land, where a ,
heavy sod has been turned under, it is I
found to thoroughly pulverize tho soil i
without disturbing the sod. In preparing
ordinary stubble for turnips, two or three
times going over with llus harrow will
make it as fine as a sued bed. It is not
one of the least recommendations of this
implement that it requires loading to the
amount of the weight of an ordinary
man. This will commend it to farm la
borers to whom harrowing is not, as a
general thing, an attractive employment.
Cu It i rat Ion of Trees.
Wo are glud to tee that many portions
of tlio euuntry uro awakening to the itn
portanco of preserving timber, and also
of cultivating it. A largo amount of
timber may be grown along the Hides of
highwuys, where it not only grows well,
being constantly fertilized from the wush
iuga of the road, but also aliorii.s u most
gruteful pruteetiou from winds- in Winter,
and tho teorcliitig Summer r-uti. The
Legislature of Kauian, with a view to en
courage this kind of treo culture, euaeted
at iu lust Bosnion the following :
"Any inhabitant liable to highway tax,
who ahull truiiK))luiit by the aide of the
highway nuy finest, ttliadc, or fruit trees of
suitable size, shall U allowed by tlio over
seers of tho liighwnyH, in abatement of his
highway tax, one dollar for every fuurtiees
net out, but no row of elms ahull bo placed
nearer than seventy feet ; no row of maples
or other forest trees nearer tliun fifty feet,
except locust, which may be set upuit, nnd
uo allowance, as before mentiouod, nhall bo
mude unless such tree shall have been set
out the year previous to the demand of such
abatement of tax, nud living nnd well pro
tected from animals nt the timo of such
demand."
This is a wise law, and it would bo well
for older States to tako a hint from it.
