OUR TERMS

80 Nassau street, New York, in a fraud.
There Is no such firm.
A Sunday School Paper. We have re
ceived a copy of a paper issued by tho Sab
bath school of the St. James Lutheran
church at Huntingdon. Rov. J. J. Kerr is
the editor. '
Arrested. A young darkey named Chas.
Green has been arrested and lodged in jail
in this borough, charged with robbing tho
money drawer in the warehouse of Wm.
Everhart, at Millorstown. Tho theft was
committed on the 1st Inst., and tho arrest
was mado on Saturday last.
A Communication in another . column
calls attention to an enterprise which it is
proposed to establish in this borough, which
our correspondent wishes to speak of further
in another letter, if wo will allow him the
space. Tho column's of tho Times are al
ways open for the discussion, of any sub
ject of general Interest, and consequently
we will publish tho article he refers to.
Meeting lu the Court House. The Car
lisle Presbytery meets in the court house of
this town next Tuesday evening at 7 o'clock,
when a sermon will bo delivered by Rov.
Mr. Malion, of Shippensburg, or in his ab
sence by Rev. Mr. Gordon, of Burnt Cab
ins and on Wednesday morning another
sermon will be delivered by Dr. Robinson,
of Harrisburg, or in his absence by Dr.
Erskine, of Newvillo.
,AA Desperate Fellow. On Sunday morn
ing Calvin Morris, who is confined in jail
in this borough -for making a deadly as
sault on his uncle near Montgomery's Ferry,
about thrco weeks ago, packed up his
things and determined to start for home.
He had succccdod in reaching the foot of
the stairs where he met and mado an at
tack upon Mr. Showalter the deputy Sheriff
who interfered witlj his "flitting" arrange
ments. Mr. S. was compelled to use harsh
measures and to call in assistance before the
young chap was returned to his quarters.
He is evidently a dangerous customer and
should be tent where he can be properly se
cured and medically treated.
V Outrageous. The charges of tho Express
Companies for carrying small packages,
are in many instances so exhorbitant as to
amount to an outrageous swindle. On Sat
urday last, , wo received a packago two
inches long' and threo fourths of an inch
square, by Express from New York, for
which the charge was seventy cents, being
three times the value of the article and five
times the cost of sending it by mail. If
fellows who make such charges for their
services in this world, don't get a pretty
severe overhauling in the world to come,
we can't see the use of having a place of
future punishment The best way to avoid
these swindling charges is to send small
and light articles by mail, and largor ones
by some regular freight line, which gener
ally has an established rate of charge which
is within the bounds of reason.
Runaway Accident. On Tuesday last,
Mr. KeU, of Ryo township, sent two of
his boys with his horse and carriage to take
Mrs. Win, Mayall, to Marysville, Where
she was to take the cars for Duncaunon.
While descending a long hill near Mr.
Zitorlcy's, the horse became unmanageable
and ran to the foot of the hill, where, turn
ing short, the carriage was upset, badly
injuring the old, lady, though fortunately
breaking no bones. She was removed to
, her residence in Duncannon, to which
place Mr. Mayall was moving hut family
that day from Fishing Creek. H. Foulk,
Esq., intended to have taken her to the
depot, but had left home for Cumberland
county before word was tent him that the
family intended moving on that day, con
sequently Mr. Hell's boys were sent to take
her down with the above unfortunate re
sult. -
Horse Tbief Arrested. On Monday, the
27th ult, a man named Nickel, hired a
horse and buggy at the livery stable of IL
K. Peffer, Esq., in this borough, witii the
avowed purpose of going to Harrisburg.
Not returning at the time specified, suspi
cions were aroused and search made.
On Wednesday, Constable Charles Sanno
Arrested Nickel at Hunter's Run, with the
property in bis possession. He was brought
back to Carlisle and lodged in the "Sand
stone Tower. He will probably be tried
' At the April sessions. Carlisle Volunteer.
X A Bad Case. On last Wednesday after-
boon, a fellow named Michael Eagln,
who resides within a mile of Stcrrett's Gap,
enticed a boy not yet flvo years of ago, a
son of Homy ShoafTor,of this borough, into
tho woods about half a milo back of town.
After badly tearing tho child's clothes and
abusing tho boy, the fellow laid down and
went to sleep. , Tho boy then returned
homo, and telling his father what had hap
pened, wont and showed him where the
man was. Mr. S. then returned for help,
and going back, found tho man aslcop, with
a large dirk-knifo hesido him. This ho at
tempted to use, but it was taken from him,
and ho was brought to town and committed
to jail for twenty-four hours as a vagrant,
he being badly under the Influenco of liq
uor at tho time. On Thursday evening ho
was released, no other charge having been
made, and he was started out of town.
He had got but a short distance, when some
persons armed with horse whips bogan to
hurry him along, and after chasing him .a
short distanco other persous were found
prepared to continue tho chase. Those
were in turn relieved by other parties until
tho man had been run in this manner near
ly half a mile.' '
The motive which induced Eagin to tako
tho child, can be accounted for only on the
supposition that he thought it a girl, aud
his treatment of him while- in the woods,
is evidence that such was his beliof. Wo
do not npprovo of lynch-law, but if any
thing would make a resort to it excusable,
it would be the commission of such a crime
as was undoubtedly intended in this case.
Lighting Railroad Cars by Gas. -The
Pennsylvania Railroad Company have been
engagod for several months past in devis
ing means and making preparation for the
introduction of gas into the passenger
trains on their road and its branches. Tho
experiment proved remarkably successful
and satisfactory, so far as tried, thirty-five
cars having been fitted with tho necessary
apparatus. Additions to tho number are
being made as fast as possiblo, and it is tho
intention of tho company to light all trains
in this manner. For tho purpose of mp
plying cars with gas, proper provision will
be mado at various points cast and west.
A building is already in use in Pittsburg,
containing six gas reservoirs connected by
pipes with each other, with a large meter.
These reservoirs are calculated to with
stand a pressure of 400 pounds to the
square inch. The gas, as it passes into tho
reservoirs, goes through the meter, so that
an exact record of the uncondensedgas can
be kept. At present the gas is obtained
from the city. ' Preparations are being
mado, however, to manufacture it from
crude oil, in the depot yard, which, it is
thought, can be accomplished at a saving
of one-fourth of the present cost, with
greater illuminating power.. From the con
densing tanks ill the building a pipe runs
out, under the platform. It separates into
several branches, each of these running be
tween two of the tracks on which the wait
ing trains stand. At intervals, over these
pipes, are trap-doors, and in tho pipe, at
each of those openings, is a coupling for
ho so. When a car is to be supplied, tho
trap-door nearest it is opened, a rubber
hose is coupled to tho pipo, and to the car
reservoir, the stop-cock in tho reservoir
building is turned, and tho car-tanks are
filled. '
The apparatus attached to the cars is by
no means complicated. On each side of
the car undor the floor, is one of the boiler
reservoirs, smaller than those in the build
ing, and into these tho gas is conducted by
the hose. A pipe passes from those into
the car saloon, where a small meter is situ
ated. When " lighting time" arrives the
gas is turned on here. Thero are five
burners in each car. A bracket burns in the
saloon, and suspended from the roof of the
car, midway between the centro and -tho
ends, ara two brono chandaliera of two
burners each, by theBO burners the car is
so brilliantly lighted that reading is an
easy matter in any part of the car, and the
conductor, in collecting his ticket dispenses
With his traditional lantern. Each car
takes with it gas enough for sixty hours
steady burning. ' ' -' " '
Similar arrangoments are being made at
Philadelphia, Altoona, Chicago, and other
points for supplying the cars with gat in a
like manner. State Journal. ,

A New Enterprise. ; :
Mr. Editor I have no doubt many of
your readers will be Interested in knowing
that an attempt is being mado, with a fair
prospect of success, to form an association
in this county whose object is to act as a
medium of communication between those
who have money to loan, and those who
wish to borrow. I will merely say here,
however, that the intention it not that the
stock-holders shall get rich at the expense
of the public, but that those who need an
occasional loan shall be able to get it at a
fair rate of interest. It is intended that
the office of the company shall be at liloom
iield, and I expect that an application will
be made at the next term of court for an
act of incorporation. If you will allow
me the space, I will, in another letter set
forth the plau of those interested, showing
upon what basis they propose to establish
it, and in what manner the capital is to bo
raised, at well as the advantages the pro
posed enterprise will oner to the farmers
and mechanics of this county. . , : i ,

Sale Hills. All orders for sale bills by
mail, will be promptly attended to.
Jnst So. A man recently asked the price
of postage stamps, aud was told "three
cents," whereupon bo asked if he couldn't
have them cheaper if he took four or five.
To this the accommodating Postmaster
responded i " AVe cannot sell them at that
rate now. - We could bavo done so until
lately, but now tho Government punches
holos around each stamp for tho con
venience of tho pooplo, which so increases
the cost that we cannot afford to make any
discount." The satisfied, customer cheer
fully paid three cents. .- ',
Mill Notice. Mr. Samnol Travel, who,
last fall, bought the mill in Centre town
ship, formerly owned by Mr. Samuel Comp,
has taken charge of tho premises, and is
prepared to manufacture flour that will
please his customers. .' .Corn in tho car will
bo chopped for the tenth bushel. Wo trunt
our farmers will give him a liberal share
of their patronage. , 2t
Strange If Trnc. A young lady named
Taylor, living at Kelly's station, Indiana

Ou Thursday last tho stable belonging to
Daniel Koifer of Orrstown was destroyed
by fire. Tho firo was caused by incendia
rism. A subscriber from Whcatfleld twp., is
anxious that somo person should call tho
attention of the supervisors to tho condition
of their roads.
On Saturday last tho thormometer at 2
p. m., indicated 80 degrees and at six
p. m., it stood at 80 degreos. This may be
called pretty fair summer heat.
A Democratic convention was held in
this borough, on Monday, for tho purpose
of electing delegates to tho State conven
tion for nominating Auditor aud Surveyor
General.
On last Wednesday evening about 7
o'clock the stable in Madison twp., belong
ing to Mr. Georgo Honch took fire and was
entirely destroyed. By great exertion
the stock was all removed. How tho firo
originated is unknown.
A petition is in circulation in Snrincr
twr
wp., asking tho legislature to reduce tho
wages of supervisors from $1 Q04 to $1 per
day. A better way to reduce the taxes
would be to have fewer roads.
Lebanon has a " Dime Savings Bank"
in successful operation. From the scarcity
of money in circulation in this vicinity we
should think that each family had estab
lished a bank of that kind.
Potatoes are very scarce this uminir and
readily bring $1, per bushel. . Tho conse
quence will be that nearly every person
will plant more than their usual quantity,
and that next year in all probability, they
will not briug enough to pay the cost of
raising. . . ,
Those who have tried it, say that if you
stop with Amos Robinson, you are sure to
stop at a good hotel. He keeps the house
recently kept by Mr. Turbett and has
made a decided improvement on thoplaco
having painted, papered and fixed up
generally.
