J On tho 221 inst., a fire broke out
in the tannery and bark mill of Shirk &
Bro., at Bird-iu-IIund, about seven miles
east of Lancaster, on the Pennsylvania
railroad. The two-story brick tannery,
the bark mill and an extensive shed
covering the vats were destroyed.

North Tenth street, was out riding the
other evening, and when he came homo
his wife fouud a false curl attached to
the button on the side of his cap. lie
couldn't conceive how it got there, but
his wife guessed it right the first time.

Ohio Legislature which requires railroads
to construct platforms or aprons between
passenger cars upon their lines, with
sideboards or network of wire or scrap
iron at each side of said bridges, of at
least equal height with tho ordinary
railing, upon cur platforms.

miles north of Fayettevillo, Ark., was the

enacted on the 10th inst. A man named
Roland killed his wife and child, an
infant nine mouths old, and then
committed suicide. Cause domestic

been uunoyed by the slaughter of their
poultry. Mr. Jackson, a lurge stock
raiser, who lives within two or three miles
uf tho village, huving lost over a huudred
hoad, set a wotch for tho thief. On
Sunday night Mr. Jackson and two or
three of his men ormcd themselves with
puns, und watched all night. Just before
daybreak the thieves appeared iu the
Miape of three lurgo wolves. The watchers
levelled their guns aud fired, killing one
of the wolves. The other two escaped.
Keif WilkesWro was the sccue of a
terrible tragedy on Monduy last. A
prominent lawyer and politician of that
town, while suffering from Maniu-u-potu
made an attack upon his housekeeper with
a penknife und cut her throat iu a
dreadful uumuor. lie thcu commenced
in himself with the same instrument,
first at his throat, making a cut of
uonslderublo length, from . which the
blood flowed very freely, aud then iu tho
region of his heart, where ho made five
stabs. Help soon arrived and the
wounds were dreesed.wit h some probability
of their recovery. .
