in escaping, on Saturday night week,
after a lierco assault on the jailor.
J8 Captain F. W. Perkins, a well
known steamship agent, was found dead
in his office, No. 20 Carnndelet street,
last week shot through tho head and
other evidences of violence. Tho coroner
is investigating tho affair.
B& Mayor Sturgis, of Meridian, Miss.,
was on Tuesday morning, on his own
motion given a safo conduct to tho cars
by citizens, on a plodgo to go North and
never return, after tendering his resigna
tion. JBgy The latest thing in tho boot and
shoe lino at Boston, is a crimped calf
boot, tho calf skin tanned with tho hair
on, and made up with the hair outside
tipped with alligator leather. Ladies'
boots of the same style have also been
made.

graph office in New Orleans, whilo tho
operator went to dinner, heard some one
"call" over tho wires, and began shouting
at the instrument : " Do operator isn't
here." Tho noise ceased.
A Cincinnati man kicked a black
dog off his doorstep, the other night, as
ho supposed, and was horrified when a
policeman picked it up and found it an
Ethiopian baby wrapped up in a black
cloth. The kick killed it.
t& Tho authorities have demanded of
tho Warden of Nevada State Prison tho
surrender of the Trano car robbers, who
are now serving a term of thirty years
each. If surrendered tho robbers will bo
tried in the United States Circuit Court
this week for murder.
ft It is said that President Grant's
colored barber exercises his vocation in
two distinct spheres. Ho shampoos and
trims whiskers in tho Executive Depart
ment, and shaves the Treasury Depart
ment by drawing a salary of $1,200 a
year as clerk.

and owning the house ho lives in, lately
Tcfuscd to bury bis father, who died sud
denly, but turned tho body over to the
Coroner to be buried as a pauper, sign
ing his name to a paper which read as
follows : " I hereby rofuse to take charge
of the corpse of my father or pay for its
burial."

ried couple at tho house of Mordccai Kcl
loy, at Monroe, Wis., Monday evening,
were fired into by Kelley, and a young
man named Patlin, a brother of tho brido
was instantly killed and two others serious
ly wounded. Kelley surrendered him
self the next morning, and claims not to
have known the gun was loaded.

of Eddy, Sullivan county, N. Y., was
married tho other evening to -Miss Par
menter, and after the wedding feast went
with the guests to escort his bride and
ber undo to the depot, to scud them oil
on the wedding trip, as he had no time
to attend to it, and bo was anxious she
should have a wedding trip somehow or
other.

Senator Revels declined to com
ply with tho numerous letters and tele
grams to go to Mississippi and election
eer for his return to tho Senate. He says
ho feels it to be his duty to remain away
until alter the contest is decided, so that
it cannot bo said hereafter that he tried
to influence tho Legislature in his own
interest. The politicians aro surprised
and puzzled at this patriotio and unself
ish spirit.

thrown out finally on tho ground that tho
last claimant is too remotely related to
the original pensioner to recover.
