FARM AND HOUSEHOLD ITEMS
We invite, commtintcatlonsfrom all jwrsonsirhoare
interested in mutters properly belonging to this
department.
Rolling Grain In the Spring.
If farmers would look at tlio theory of
rolling tlio wheat und ryo fields in the
spring, it would be resorted to much
more frequently than it is. Occasionully
the winter and spring have been so favor
nblo to theso crops as not to render it
necessary. iJut in throe seasons out oi
four it is necessary, and doubtless adds
considerably to their productiveness
The thawings and freezings of the ground,
throwing or spewing out tho roots and
exposing them to tho drying winds of
February and March, very seriously af
fect tho grain. Passing a roller over as
soon as tlio soil is fit to enter upon, press
es back tho roots into their beds, and
gives them a fair grip again upon tho
support, on which tho crop must depend.
This must bo apparent to every one who
will look at its operations. Wo have no
doubt that rolling over clover fields that
have been badly thrown up by tho frost,
would also have a beneficial effect.
Hints on Colts.
1. Kenicniber that tho early part of
tho life of a colt determines in a great
measure, whether at maturity the animal
will be highly valuable or worthless.
2. Obscrvo carefully and early how a
colt carries his feet, his fore feet in par
ticular. If ho inclines to carry them too
near the ground, turn him into a pasture
which has a very rough sujface. In this
way ho will get into the habit of raising
his feet high.
3. If ho inclines to point his toes
down, so as to make him likely to trip, he
ought to be shod early, and the shoes
should be thick before and thin behind,
to give him a habit of raising his toes.
4. I3y all means uso kinducss and
gentleness toward a colt, go that ho may
become docile, fearless, and put confi
dence in his master.
A Good Bat Trap.
Take a barrel which will hold water,
cut the head a little smaller than the top
of the barrel; pass a string through tho
centre of the head and hang it up so that
it may hang perfectly free insido the bar
rel, three or four inches below the chino.
Now put in five or six inches of water,
and drop some grease on top of the bar
rel head, which you must balance by tack
ing on some thin pieces of lead, place
your trap whore tho rats can easily get at
it, and it is ready. They come up to get
the grease, and in stepping on one side
of the head the other naturally, tips up,
and in goes the rat. The head soon gains
its equilibrium and is ready for another.
Sometimes when there is considerable
grease around where they can get at it,
they won't take it for bait. In this case,
put a little anise-seed in your bait.
Clover and Grass Seed.
Do you know that Ohio is the greatest
clover-seed producing region in America ?
and this production is mainly confined to
a few of the mid norwestern counties, as
Wyandot, Crawford, Allen, Morrow, Sen
eca, and others thereabout. This winter
the trade in clover-seed is quite lively,
and very much of it is sold through Cin
cinnati, Tennesco, and Georgia, and con
siderable quantities are sent to New
York, Philadelphia, and Baltimore.
Formerly there was a large production
of cloverseed in France, but tho war
has cut off tho crop of Franco this sea
son, aud now American clover is going to
England and Scotland.
How to Feed Bees.
Bees way be fed in box-hives as fol
lows :
Bore two or three holes in the top, set
on shallow dishes containg the feed mixed
with shavings or cut straw, to koep the
bees from drowning and cover the whole
with a close-fitting box, so that no bees
can get in except through tho hive. In
case of movable frames, the combs may
be takon out and held at an angle of forty-five
degrees, and the honey or syrup
poured through a flaUbottotnod tin dish
with some twenty small holes punched in
the bottom, into the cells. When one
side is filled, the combs can be turned
und the process repeated with the other
side.
A Perfect Horse.
One who is considered as authority in
horse mutters, states that a perfect horse
is one about fifteen und a half or six
teen hands high; a lengthy, arched nock:
bharp-pointed ears; a lurgo, full Laitol
eye ; broad between them J not too long a
luce, but a straight oue ; a lurgo, open
nostril; a strong under jaw to masticate
his food well ; a good, round body j a big,
full chest; large around the girth, deno
ting plenty of lung power; thin withers,
Rud an nniiuul standing ereot on his fore
legs. Such animals it should be the ob
ject of breeders to produce, and this re
quires both judgment and care.
