a Methodist church in Jefferson county,
Iowa, a few nights ago, and addressed the
young peoplo present, telling tbem that
ho had long sought to live a Christian,
aud that life was most uncertain, lie sat
down, and in a few minutes died.
Jfciy A Savannah paper reports that a
tnau who was eating oysters at a saloon in
that city, contemptuously threw a large
pearl, worth $100, aside, remarking that
the Savannah people didn't know how to
open oysters, for they left in large pieces

BS?" A Georgia lawyer refused an ap
pointment as district attorney, the other
day, because the Judgo is a colored man,
and his letter has brought out a reply
from Governor Ilullock, who publishes
the lawyer's petition for the very office ho
now so indignantly spurns, also a letter
from the colored Judge, iaelosod by hiui,
indorsing tho application.
53"" Commend us to fanner Jettison, of
Wappello county, Iowa. The old man had
a contract to build a barn, and was ham
mering away at it, when an attorney
came to inform him that ho had become
heir to a $10,000,000 legacy iu England.
Jettison paused, scratched his head, aud
finally said : " I don't see how I can go
now; I've got this barn to finish !"
That's business.
CiS At a meeting in Augusta, Maine,
in 1845, to consider the subject of build
ing tho Kennebec and Portland llailroad,
tho lion. George Kvans made a speech,
declaring that tho severity of tho winters
would prevent the road from being oper
ated more than otto hundred and ninety
days in each year. Tho estimato of Col.
Lang, tho engineer was two hundred daj-s.
The result is that trains can run three
hundred and sixty-five days.
Maria Ogdcn, aged 51 years, liv
ing in Philadelphia, was dangerously
burned on Tuesday evening while engag
ed in heating a cup of alcohol over a gas
jet. She was attending upon a sick child
at the timo, and was preparing tho spirits
to soothe the sufferings of tho little one.
Tho spirits boiled over and ignited, setting
fire to Mrs. Ogden's garments. Whilo
hIio was lying helpless "rotu her injuries,
tho child died.
Biir There is a farmer in Uristol,
Connecticut, who deserves confinement in
tho penitentiary more than some men that
are thero. His cart loaded with wood
caught on a railroad crossing in such a
manner that his oxen couldn't start it.
Ilo unhitched his cattle, remembering
that a train was duo, uud calmly awaited
results. The cars came on nt full speed,
tho farmer doing nothing to stop them,
aud the engineer, in blinding suow, fail
ed to see the obstruction till too late.
Its speed probably saved the train, for' it
swept tho obstruction from tho track with
a crash, scattering the wood like straw.
It was almost miraculous that the man's
btupidity did not result in the loss of
many lives.
OSy An Ohio paper thus describes an
effort by ono of Ohio's Legislators : "Mr.
Acker, tho eminent horn swaggler, thrill

his most majestic efforts. A short-horn
reporter describes tho scetto us indescriba
ble. Ladies on the back seats were
obliged to climb un to tho back of tho
chairs to escape tho torrents of eloiuenco
and things. Tho speaker was so charged
with '.he electricity of eloquence that his
bharpJy pointed spike tail coat frequently
stood f.t an angle of sixty degrees and
trembled liko au nspen. Tho orator most
of the time rosuuiblod ou irresponsible
victim in galvanio Blippers. lie rearod
